RBIEX The Peering Gateway

What is RBIEX? RBIEX is a Limited-by-Guarantee Members Owned Company. Run by the members for the benefit of the members. Day to day operations governed by a Council of Management. CoM comprised of three director electives, and four member electives. CoM members are elected by the membership at the AGM and serve for a year at a time.

RBIEX’s Objectives RBIEX was designed as a “My First Peering Point” with a focus on the community responsibilities. i.e. We try to teach new members how to run BGP properly before they’re let loose on you lot! RBIEX is chartered to maintain good relations with the management of the buildings that have RBIEX PoPs, as well as Working Groups to help guide members into doing things correctly.

Membership Overview RBIEX has been designed to be as “free, as in beer” as possible, whilst being able to afford new kit, etc. without a single sponsor or whip-around. Joining is a two stage process, being a member-based organisation you can’t use the services without being a social member first. (£25.00 a year!) Once a social member, peering ports are available at 10 and 100Mbit/sec for £100.00 and £200 a year…

RBIEX Technology Overview RBIEX is based on an MLP approach, but with a twist… All peering AS-PATHs look like private peering. e.g. 34623 not 31150 34623 RBIEX has been dual-address family for over 14 months. The flexibility of our configuration means v4 and v6 over a shared layer 2 without adverse effects.

Current Membership / Traffic RBIEX currently has 15 members, one is a social only. One member is also signed up to the Transit Supply group. PoPs in Interhouse I, II and III. 13 live IPv4 sessions with 54 routes. 5 live IPv6 sessions with 9 routes. Average traffic levels; 5 Mbit -> 98 Mbit when our Fedora mirror gets hammered.
