Results We have raised attainment in Literacy, especially in Reading! Next Steps Reading - Strathclyde University Equitable Literacy Project How to read (Cognitive) Background knowledge (Cultural) Love of reading (Identity) North Lanarkshire Spelling approaches P3 – 7 Following on from Read Write Inc

Reading Programme – Strathclyde University

Reading Programme – Strathclyde University

Reading Programme – Strathclyde University

Reading P1-7 Home Learning This will evolve as we become more involved with the Strathclyde University programme Will continue to emphasise the enjoyment of reading More books may be sent home – some to be read with parents and others to be enjoyed independently If a book appears too easy this will be because it has been practiced extensively in class or has been chosen as a fun, comfortable book Further details will follow

Two Types of Spelling Words Phonics-based Words Sight Words You can ‘sound out’ these words, they make sense using the phonics taught in P1-3 Words that children should know on sight without having to sound out – may not be able to be sounded out c-a-r-d he t-r-a-g-i-c come b-a-n-a-n-a people i-n-t-e-r-v-e-n-ti-o-n through

Home Learning Spelling Core: Sight words to be learned through a range of activities – family choice as to whether the words are learned through written work Extension: Phonics sound to be explored e.g. Find 8 ‘sh’ words and use in a paragraph Assessment: Sentence dictation rather than spelling test

Spelling Strategies Phonics In P1-3 – ‘Fred Talk’ & Diacritical Marking In P3- P7 – Diacritical Marking Elkonin Boxes

Spelling Strategies Syllabification – breaking words into syllables. Each syllable will contain a vowel Words within words – e.g. spray – ray chocolate – cola, ate Compound words – breakfast break/fast One syllable words – double the final consonant before an ending that starts with a vowel e.g. drop  dropped hop  hopping

Spelling Strategies Using analogy – if you can spell light – you can also spell bright, fright and tight Mnemonic – children create their own memory aid e.g. trial – the road is a loop practice ice – noun practise ise - verb Separate – there is a rat in separate Spelling rules (if appropriate) e.g. i before e except after c – brief, ceiling

Home Learning Policy Home Learning tasks are given out on a Monday to be completed by Friday Core Home Learning Tasks are to be learned e.g. the story of 10, the 3x table, 5 Sight Words. Children can tackle this learning in any way that works. Extension Tasks are optional and are very varied. They may involve written tasks. Families choose whether to do the extension tasks.
