Discovery 107-C Discovering God’s Salvation Prepared by Dennis Henderson, D. Min. INTRODUCTION: 1 Timothy 1:15 Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst. This study will have three parts: (Let’s Review) Part 1 = The Definition, Need, Basis and Nature of Salvation Part 2 = The Application and Results of Salvation Part 3 = More Results and the Climax of Salvation I. More Results of Salvation 1. Adoption--huiothesia—legal “son placing” (Rom 8:15-16; Gal 4:5; Eph 1:5) John 8:44 “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire.” Eph 1:5 “he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ” With all rights and privileges thereto. Rom 8:15-16 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father.“ 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Gal 4:5 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5 to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.

Eph 1:4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— While a justified person is forgiven and declared righteous—it does not make that person part of the family. Adoption does! 2. Sanctification [1] -Definition of Sanctification = to set apart from and to something—it is the renewal of the whole man after the image of God so we are enabled, more and more to die to sin, and live unto righteousness (1 Cor 1:2, 30; 2 Cor 7:1; 1 The 5:23) [2] - Aspects of Sanctification 1 Past-- when we believed we were “made holy” (set apart) in Christ and called “saints.” 2 Present-- every moment I live, set apart from sin, I am holy practically. 3. Future–when Christ returns I will be set apart from sin for good [3] - Nature of Sanctification —putting off the old nature and … —putting on the new nature Eph 4:24 [4] - Cause of Sanctification The Triune God: Father (1 Thes 5:23) Son (Heb 2:11) Holy Spirit (1 Pet 1:2)

[5] - Means of Sanctification The Word of God (John 17:17) II. Assurance of Salvation 1. Perseverance Those who have placed genuine faith in Christ will hang in there (persevere) to the end. Genuine believers stay true! They may backslide temporarily, but will eventually repent because they kept by the power of God (1 Peter 1:5) Heb 10:35 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. 36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37 For in just a very little while, "He who is coming will come and will not delay. 38 But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him."39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved. Then Hebrews 11 “Hall of Heroes” 2. Preservation Means that the believer is kept by God unto the end! 1 Peter 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last Phil 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Jude 1:1 … To those who have been called, who are loved by God the Father and kept (“preserved”--KJV) by Jesus Christ: Other verses: John 10:25-30; 3:36; 5:24; 6:47; Romans 8:28-39; Heb 7:25; 1 John 2:19;

III. Climax of Salvation Three tenses of Salvation: Past – I was saved … FROM THE PENALTY OF SIN! Regeneration and Conversion: For me it happened at … 2. Present – I am being saved … FROM THE POWER OF SIN! When I put off the old nature and put on the new one … by sanctification. 3. Future – I will be saved … FROM THE PRESENCE OF SIN when I go to be with Jesus. Glorification … is the final climactic act of God’s salvation. God has purposed to complete our salvation with glory! Rom 8:29, 30 For those God foreknew he also predestined ... 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. It is sharing Christ’s Glory! Rom 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs-- heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. It includes a Glorious Body! 1 Cor 15:42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in
