Presentation transcript:

Somatic cells Gametes Homologous chromosomes d. Sex cells These are the sex cells of the body, which are also known as gametes

Chromosomes Autosome Somatic cells gametes All of these cells are somatic cells, also known as body cells.

Homologous chromosomes Sister chromatids Sex chromosomes Crossing over These are homologous chromosomes because they look similar and code for the same information. One is from mom and one is from dad.

Sister chromatids Somatic cells Zygote karyotype This is a karyotype, a picture of someone’s chromosomes.

These are sister chromatids because one is an exact copy of the other a. Gametes b. Sister chromatids c. Homologous chromosomes d. zygote These are sister chromatids because one is an exact copy of the other

Diploid Haploid Allele Crossing over The cell shown on the left is……… The cell on the left is diploid because it has 2 sets of chromosomes, one set from mom and one set from dad.

Heterozygous genotype The cell on the right is…… Diploid Haploid Crossing over Heterozygous genotype The cell on the right is haploid because it does not have a complete set of chromosomes from mom and dad.

Sex cells Sister chromatids Gene chiasmata The arrow is pointing to the point where crossing over will take place, the chiasmata.

The first 22 pairs of homologous chromosomes are called autosomes. a. Karyotype b. Sex chromosomes c. Autosomes d. Somatic cells The first 22 pairs of homologous chromosomes are called autosomes.

Sex cells Gametes Autosomes Sex chromosomes The last pair of chromosomes on the karyotype are sex chromosomes, they tell whether you are male or female.

Independent assortment Somatic cells Homozygous genotype Crossing over These homologous chromosomes are crossing over and exchanging genetic information.

Independent assortment Gene chiasmata Sex cells Independent assortment Gene chiasmata This shows independent assortment because it shows different ways the gametes could vary genetically from the random lining up of the chromosomes.

This is showing a chromosome made from chromatin. Gametes Gene Chromosome chromatin This is showing a chromosome made from chromatin.

This shows DNA coiled up to make chromatin. Karyotype Gene Chromosome chromatin This shows DNA coiled up to make chromatin.

This section of DNA is a gene; it will code for a specific protein. Allele Gene chromosome This section of DNA is a gene; it will code for a specific protein.

Dominant Gene Allele karyotype These matching parts on homologous chromosomes are called alleles because they are different versions (Mom and Dad) of the same gene.

A zygote has been formed by the joining of an egg and sperm. Sister chromatids Zygote Autosome chiasmata A zygote has been formed by the joining of an egg and sperm.
