Function Operations 8/14/2017

Operations with Functions Functions follow the same rules as numbers when we add, subtract, and multiply. (we can divide functions, however it takes a little more work) Combining like terms has to be done when we add, subtract, and multiply. When we add, subtract, multiply or even divide two or more functions the result will always be a new function. Arrange new function with variables in descending order of exponents. (larger exponents first)

Example 1 Let f(x) = 4x + 7 and g(x) = 12 + x. What is f + g?

Example 2 Let f(x) = 4x + 7 and g(x) = 12 + x. What is 2f + 3g?

Now lets try Subtracting MUST DISTRIBUTE THE MINUS (negative) SIGN!!!!!!!!!!! Ex 3 Let f(x) = 4x + 7 and g(x) = 12 + x. What is f - g?

Example 3 Let 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 2 +8 and 𝑔 𝑥 =𝑥 −3. What are the results of f+g and f-g?

More Practice (Separate Sheet of Paper) #1-4 Let f(x) = 3x – 1 and g(x) = 4x + 3 f + g 2f + 3g f – g 3f – 5g #5-8 Let 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 +2𝑥 −1 and 𝑔 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 −3𝑥+5 f + g 2f + 3g f – g 3f – 5g

Closing Task In your own words describe how to add and subtract functions. (3-4 sentences)
