January 23, 2017 Faculty Meeting

I can engage students from poverty in instruction. Learning Targets I can engage students from poverty in instruction. I know why a relational mindset is important. I can use a poster session to help students explain their understanding of key concepts.

MS/ HS science

Poster Session Purpose: A novel way for students to present and exchange ideas about a topic being discussed or studied. Procedure: Students select a concept or idea related to the topic or unit being studied. They then prepare a visual display of the concept on a poster board. The poster can include words and pictures, and should be self-explanatory. That is, observers should easily understand the idea without any further written or oral explanation. Often, criteria for evaluation of posters include clarity, comprehensive­ ness, color, and creativity. Students can work alone or in pairs. They can also be asked to write a small narrative to support their visualization. Students post their visuals around the room and then circulate freely, viewing and discussing others' drawings. (The teacher may give students adhesive notes to record and provide feedback to other students about their work.) The class then convenes and the teacher leads a discussion about the work (what students learned and what they found most valuable). Posters can also be used for students to describe their thoughts and feelings about a topic.
