Introduction The Iditarod sled dog race started in 1973 but to see why lets go back to 1925. Some children were sick with Diphtheria in the village of Nome, Alaska the only way to cure it was with medicine. The closes place that had it was a hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. So, some people in Nome decided to have a relay race to get the medicine to Anchorage from Nome.

Dogs They wear booties Their equipment includes harnesses. The mushers mostly use huskies. Each musher has 16 dogs at the beginning of the race.
Routes and checkpoints The musher’s went a new way this year because there was not enough snow on the original trail. The new trail starts in Fairbanks, Alaska and ends in Nome, Alaska. The new trail is 1049 miles long and has 17 checkpoints.
Awards You could get any Iditarod award you wanted if you tried hard enough here are some of them. The red lantern award presented to the last musher. The Anchorage Chrysler Dodge Official Truck Award. Jerry Austin Rookie of the Year Award.
