Sarah • CCJS 201-004 • November 12th, 2013 Rape in the Military Sarah • CCJS 201-004 • November 12th, 2013

Introduction Rape: “the crime, typically committed by a man, of forcing another person to have sexual intercourse with the offender against their will” Rape is labeled by the military as an occupational hazard- if a woman enters the military, she needs to understand that rape is another risk that “comes with the job.” If a person is willing to take on a combat role and risk being injured by enemy fire, she shouldn’t also have to face the risk of being raped by their colleagues.

Statistics About 19,000 victims each year 26,000 sexual assaults in the military in 2012 Fewer than 1 percent resulted in a court-martial conviction Of the19,000 estimated assaults each year, more than 11,000 target men http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fBaFQk6aE0

Repurcussions 20% female and 1% male veterans screen positive for Military Sexual Trauma (MST) Military Sexual Trauma (MST), is the diagnosis to explain the severe after affects of being sexually abused or harassed. Repercussions include: Reporting rape can lead to: Lowering of rank Death threats Charges of adultery Being discharged from the military Removal from their academy Forced abortion Suicide Feeling depressed, angry or irritable Trouble falling or staying asleep. Problems with alcohol or other drugs. Not feeling safe. Feeling alone or not connected to others. Physical/ mental health problems (PTSD or anxiety disorder)

reasons The military in a sense learned to dehumanize women and objectify them instead and used this as a war tactic. Either women have to deal with it or become more masculine themselves Male victims of rape are caused mainly by homophobia Rape has become an unwanted distractions from “good order and discipline” to be dealt with, hastily, at the lowest command level. This means simply transferring or demoting suspected perpetrators for “sexual harassment” and referring distraught victims to uniformed mental-health experts who diagnose them with “personality disorders” and help wash them out of the military

awareness A class action lawsuit has been filed to help those victimized in military sexual assault cases where chain of command dismissed them so easily. “When executive branch officials violate Congressional law, and those violations deprive service members of their Constitutional rights, the federal courts can and should intercede” Director Kirby Dick made a documentary in 2012 called, The Invisible War focusing on the victims of sexual assault in the military Wigs has a new web series called Lauren, focusing on women in the military dealing with sexual abuse.
