Chester city

History Chester is an historic city on the border of Wales and England. Its origins can be traced back to the founding of the Roman fortress of Deva in 70AD. After the Romans and Vikings, Chester developed into a busy port with trade from Dublin. But the river Dee silted up and trade declined and the city's development was frozen. Today Chester is a major tourist attraction and shopping location famous for its archaeological and architectural treasures preserved to this day from the time of the Roman occupation.

Monuments Chester Cathedral is a truly remarkable building, with a history spanning almost two thousand years. According to legend, a prehistoric Druid temple existed on this site, which was succeeded by a Roman temple dedicated to Apollo. When Christianity became the state religion of Rome in the fourth century AD, the pagan temple may have become a Christian church.
