What is Library Search? Google-like search interface Searches all our library resources in one go including books, DVDs, journals, conference proceedings and reports Search across all subject areas Results are displayed with the most relevant first Access full-text if available Use wherever you have access to the Internet. Library Search is useful when you need to find information on a particular subject. http://www.flickr.com/photos/milagraceari/4618671983/

Access Library Search myUniHub > My Study > My Library > Library Search Select ‘Library Search’ from the list of resources Accessing Library Search this way, means that you should be able to access full-text material where available.

Finding information using Library Search http://unihub.mdx.ac.uk/your-study/library-and-it-support

Sign-in to Library Search for full functionality Click on ‘Sign-in’, choose ‘Middlesex University’ and use your MyUniHub ID and password. Signing-in enables you to access full text material, check your library record, request items, create lists, save searches and create alerts and export references to RefWorks.

Find the book you want from the search results. In order to request the book click on the title. All copies of this book are on loan.

To find out where print items are shelved in the library… …click on the title in your search results. Location information is displayed here i.e. shelf number and floor. Make a note of the shelf number. Select the relevant campus to check availability of the book e.g. Hendon. These books are available for loan, but if a book is on loan to another student you will see this i.e the date when the book is due back. It is possible to request a book if it is on loan (next slide). Bibliographic information is available here e.g. authors name and publisher. This information is useful for referencing.

You can refine your search in several ways Limit to items which are full-text online i.e. you can read the item on your computer. Limit to Scholarly and Peer Reviewed journals i.e. good quality academic journals. Limit your search by different types of resources such as journal articles, newspapers and books or by publication date.

Some items are available full-text online Click on ‘Available Online’…. ….you will then see a list of resources which provide access to the item that you want to read. These are databases that the library subscribes to e.g. ACM Digital Library. Click on one of the links…. ….locate a PDF or HTML icon and click on it to access the item.

It is possible to save your references Click on the ‘pin’ symbol to save an item. When an item has been saved, the ‘pin’ symbol is crossed out and the item will be saved to a folder at the top of the screen. This is your ‘Favourites’ folder. Click on the ‘pin’ symbol at the top of the screen to view your saved items i.e. ‘Favourites’.

Once the ‘Favourites’ folder is open you can…. ….see a list of the items you have saved. Signing-in to Library Search means that items will remain in your Favourites folder until you choose to delete them. Click on ‘Add Labels’ to tag items. Click on ‘…’ for additional functionality. For example you can export the reference to RefWorks, email it and create a reference (Citation).

How to request a book http://unihub. mdx. ac

Click on ‘Request’ This is the date when the book is due back to the Library. Once the book is requested, the current borrower will have to return the book by this date i.e. the book will not automatically renew.

Click on ‘Send Request’…. ….if your request has been successful, you will see this message: “Your request was successfully placed”. You will be sent an email telling you when the book is ready to collect from the library.* *If you are registered as a Distance Learner, books will be posted to you. Click on the ‘X’ to return to your search results

Then click on ‘Cancel’ You will be asked to confirm that you wish to ‘Cancel this request’. Click on ‘Cancel it’ to do so. A message then appears confirming that the request has been cancelled.
