Adding Polynomials When adding polynomials, you are simply combining like terms. It may be helpful to align like terms for vertical computation.

Example 1 3a + 2b – 8c + 8 + 2a – 4b + 6c + 9 5a – 2b – 2c + 17

Example 2 2x2 + 3xy + 5y2 8x2 – 5xy + 3y + x2 + 2y2 11x2 – 2xy + 7y2

Example 3 (3x2 + 2x – 5) + (8x2 – 7x – 10)

Subtracting Polynomials Subtraction is defined as addition of the opposite. Therefore, subtraction of polynomials can be performed by adding the opposite of each term.

Example 5 (3x2 + 2x – 5) – (4x2 – 5x + 2)

Example 6 Simplify. 5a – 7b + 6c + 10 – (3a + 4b – 8c – 9) + 19

Example 7 (4x2 + 3xy – y2) – (5x2 – 8xy + 4y2)
