Overview of workshop Many SW Pacific nations have insufficient resources and capacity to enable an immediate and appropriate response to any future disaster affecting coastal areas. In addition, many nautical charts are in fathoms and on undetermined datums, compiled from very old survey data. Such inadequate and inaccurate charts can be a hindrance to effective planning in response to a disaster. The provision of Maritime Safety Information (MSI) following such disasters is critical to advise mariners of hazards. The workshop will also assist PICTs develop recommended guidelines to be followed by the National MSI Coordinator following such events.

Objective of workshop This workshop will further develop the disaster response plan first drafted by the SWPHC in 2016 following the aftermath of Cyclone Winston, in Fiji. The Plan aims at preparing the SWPHC to respond to disasters in accordance with the IHO Resolution 1/2005. In addition, the workshop will identify existing data available from web- based data portals and endeavour to instigate access to such datasets.

Outcomes At the end of this workshop: The SWPHC has a draft plan to respond to future natural disasters in the region; PICTs have recommended guidelines for the provision of MSI; PCAs and PICTs have discovered existing data to improve nautical charts.
