True Story! Non-Fiction

Autobiography An account of a person’s life written by that person Uses 1st person point of view (uses pronouns ‘I’, ‘me’, ‘we’) Written using formal or informal language i.e.: Mark Twain

Biography An account of someone's life, which is written by a different person Uses 3rd person POV (uses pronouns ‘he’, ‘she’) Uses primarily formal language Taylor Swift Kobe Bryant Lil Wayne Walt Disney

Formal v. Informal Formal language is more common when we write Informal language is more common when we speak. The difference comes with choices in grammar and vocabulary ie: We traveled to Barcelona for the weekend. There are several stories to share. ie: Went to Barcelona for the weekend. Lots of things to tell you. Dialect- a variety of language that is common to a particular region, community, or group

How do you address a group of people?

Memoir A collection of memories focusing on one aspect of a person’s life ie: going to war, one’s career, teenage years 1st person POV Formal or informal language How is this different from an autobiography? Autobiographies tell about a person’s entire life beginning at birth; memoirs zero in on a particular This I Belive OvO

Spatial Ordering Details are described as they appear in an area EX: top to bottom, left to right, near to far Standing on the beach I noticed a seagull on my left. He was eating a Cheez-It. Directly above me two more seagulls come to fight over it. Just then I hear more wings flapping. I turn around and a pelican is diving into the salty water grabbing a fish without hesitation.

Chronological Order Ideas are presented in the order they occurred First, next, then, finally, etc. EX: I walked into the school first thing in the morning ready for school to start. Then, I noticed that there was a line forming in the attendance office. I stood in line waiting for my schedule. I finally got my schedule and was relieved I got some great teachers.

Cause and Effect How one event affects the next; one thing leads to another EX: The tornado ripped through the town last night leaving several homes demolished. As a result, many families are left with nothing to their names.

Purpose/Audience An author’s purpose is his or her reason for writing. (Think: What is this for?) An author’s audience is a particular group that the author is addressing. (Think: Who is this for?)
