Formal v. Informal Formal language is more common when we write Informal language is more common when we speak. The difference comes with choices in grammar and vocabulary ie: We traveled to Barcelona for the weekend. There are several stories to share. ie: Went to Barcelona for the weekend. Lots of things to tell you. Dialect- a variety of language that is common to a particular region, community, or group
How do you address a group of people?
Memoir A collection of memories focusing on one aspect of a person’s life ie: going to war, one’s career, teenage years 1st person POV Formal or informal language How is this different from an autobiography? Spatial Ordering Details are described as they appear in an area EX: top to bottom, left to right, near to far Standing on the beach I noticed a seagull on my left. He was eating a Cheez-It. Chronological Order Ideas are presented in the order they occurred First, next, then, finally, etc. EX: I walked into the school first thing in the morning ready for school to start. Then, I noticed that there was a line forming in the attendance office. I stood in line waiting for my schedule. I finally got my schedule and was relieved I got some great teachers.
Cause and Effect How one event affects the next; one thing leads to another EX: The tornado ripped through the town last night leaving several homes demolished. As a result, many families are left with nothing to their names.
Purpose/Audience An author’s purpose is his or her reason for writing. (Think: What is this for?) An author’s audience is a particular group that the author is addressing. (Think: Who is this for?)
