Capitalization Rules: Name of the essay. Related to main idea. Capitalization Rules: Capitalize the first letter of each word. Do not capitalize prepositions: a, an, the, to, for, of, from, at, in, on (unless is the first word in the title) TITLE

1st INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH Introduction to the essay that captures the reader’s attention: Intro “THE HOOK”: an opening statement or An Anecdote: it is an interesting story that will interest the reader to the subject. A question that attracts the reader's attention. A quotation: quote an authority on the subject, or from an article, a proverb or favorite saying of someone Present facts and statistics: this will establish credibility Definition: A homograph is a word with two or more pronunciations. 2. THE THESIS: tells the main idea of the whole essay. the 3 points or reason that will be developed in the essay. 1st INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH

1st INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH: ANECDOTE TECHNIQUE Misty, a five-month-old German shepherd puppy, goes to he hospital twice a week, but not to see a veterinarian. At this Veteran’s Administration hospital, Misty is helping doctors –not the other way around. In what may seem like a role reversal, animals like Misty are visiting the halls of human illness to relieve a type of pain doctors cannot treat. Their therapy is love, both giving it and helping others return it to them. Pets ranging from dogs to tropical fish are showing up as therapists in hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons. 1st INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH: ANECDOTE TECHNIQUE

1st INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH: QUOTATION, FACTS AND STATISTICS TECHNIQUE It is often said that “Two heads are better than one.” For the past two years, the job of research assistant in my office has been shared very successfully by two people. Sharing, is growing. This “job-sharing” arrangement has worked out quite well for all involved. Throughout the business world, the interest in flexible employment arrangements, such as job-sharing, is growing. Employers are beginning to realize that there are many talented people out there who are looking for alternatives to traditional patterns of employment. In a job-sharing arrangement, a full-time job is shared by two people. As an executive in a multinational firm, I feel that job-sharing is not only helpful to employees, but also offers several advantages to employers. A job-sharing arrangement increases productivity, helps maintain diversity, and brings a broader range of skills to the job. 1st INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH: QUOTATION, FACTS AND STATISTICS TECHNIQUE

Use Transition Words: First, Next, Last,.. Start with the topic sentence for each idea. Support each idea with three (3) details. (Elaboration) PARAGRAPH #2, #3, and #4

PARAGRAPH #5, CONCLUSION It summarizes, without using the same words, the main points made in the essay. It should leave the reader agreeing, disagreeing, or at least thinking about the thesis. Techniques : Restate main points: make sure not to repeat exact words said before. Say them in a new way. Ask a question: ask a provocative question. This will keep the readers thinking about the topic. Suggest a solution; make a prediction: it might be a good place to suggest a good solution to a problem that it has been discussed, or to make a prediction. PARAGRAPH #5, CONCLUSION

PARAGRAPH #5, CONCLUSION: RESTATE THE MAIN POINTS TECHNIQUE Technological improvements by car manufacturers continue at a healthy pace, and it is not coincidence that today’s generation of cars is the safest ever. Crash tests demonstrate that many of today’s cars earn top ratings for safety. However, real-life use will always demonstrate what we already know: that cars are only as safe as the people driving them. ASK A QUESTION TECHNIQUE When the legendary Michael Jordan retired from the game that made him the richest, most famous sportsman in the world, basketball lost one of its brightest stars. Jordan retired for the third and final time on April 16, 2003, leaving a sporting legacy many people believe will remain permanently unmatched. We will always remember him for his talent, his competitive personality, and his unbelievable ability to stay in the air when all the other players were already going down. Will there ever be another sports icon as great as Michael Jordan? MAKES A PREDICTION TECHNIQUE Although John Lennon is no longer with us, his music is still very much a part of people’s lives. He was a remarkable individual who spoke in a language that everyone could relate to. During the turbulent 1960’s and 1970’s, his optimistic message of peace, love, and happiness emerged. Today, perhaps more than ever, people recall the themes of his songs and look to them for answers. In the years to come, I predict that Lennon’s message will continue to inspire countless generations. PARAGRAPH #5, CONCLUSION:
