Angiostatin: A Novel Angiogenesis Inhibitor
Presentation transcript:

Angiogenesis and Angiostatin

Angiogenesis Speculation: the body purposefully denies its cells the ability to induce angiogenesis to prevent huge tumors from growing. Tumors overcome this defense “Angiogenic switch”

Angiogenesis Inhibitors Mice with pancreatic tumors treated with anti-VEGF antibodies (destroy VEGF, angiogenesis reduced)

Angiogenesis Inhibitors tumor size regressed over 50%! surviving tumor cells produce elevated levels of fibroblast growth factors angiogenesis still occurred :(

Angiogenesis Inhibitors Some approved by FDA used if other treatments did not work, or in addition to other treatments. Cut off supply of blood, tumor will die!

Angiogenesis Inhibitors Side effects: problems with wound healing, kidney and heart function, fetal development, reproduction, clots, stroke, heart attack, gastrointestinal perforation, fistulas birth defects?

Angiostatin Produced by primary tumor! keeps metastases at bay remove the primary tumor, metastases will flourish

Angiostatin
