Purpose of Options Evening To discuss subject content with staff Who to contact: Mr Vigeon, Assistant Headteacher Mrs Fitzjohn, Office Manager To explain the options process

Which subjects are compulsory? Core GCSE subjects – English, Mathematics, Science Compulsory elements – Religious Education, Health and Sex Education, Careers (all taught through PSHE and bespoke occasions) Physical Education – Taught through Games lessons

Broad & Balanced Curriculum All Students are expected to Study: English (Language and Literature) Mathematics Combined Science (2 GCSEs) At least one baccalaureate subject from Category A This still allows room on the timetable for other subjects to be chosen in the options.

Baccalaureate Subjects Category A Computing, French, Geography, History and Triple Science (3 GCSEs) Choose at least one baccalaureate subject plus a reserve

Non - Baccalaureate Subjects Category B Art; Business Studies; Citizenship; Creative iMedia; Dance; Design Technology; Drama; Economics; Food; Health & Social Care; Music; Photography; Religious Studies; Sport, Activity and Fitness; Textiles.

Ranking of Choices You will need to rank your choices in order of preference The subject most important to you should be 1 and so on down to 4 We will use these rankings to help to make decisions in the event of a subject being over-subscribed

Are there entry requirements for any of the courses? GCSE Music: Students must be able to play a musical instrument or be willing to learn one. GCSE Food: Students must be cooking at home regularly. Catering: must cook at home too! Read Music Bring kit to PE ! GCSE Triple Award Science: Students must be working at a GCSE grade 6 or better in Science.

I am still unsure about which subjects to choose; what should I do? Ask Year 10 & 11 Broad and balanced Ask staff how it is assessed and how it differs from KS3 Enjoy/ good at Nor because you like the member of staff Staff Change or are not available. Friendships change ! Aptitude Don’t choose a subject because you think it will be easy (they are not!) or because your friend is doing it.

What happens next? Tonight: Market place – find answers and details from subject staff Talk to KS4 students about the courses they are doing and what they think about them 14th February: Option survey form – prioritise 4 option subjects (with at least one from Category A) and then add 2 reserve choices (one from each Category) Return option survey form by Monday 25th February

Processing Blocking and timetabling Clashes Student suitability Staff recommendations (attitude to subject) Review of students with additional needs Interviews with students and parents if necessary May and June – Fine tuning of everything 28th June final individual choices distributed No changes to programmes in September permitted Staff recommendations will be based on Attitude towards the subject

Market Place P1 – Business Studies, Economics, French, and Mathematics P2 – Art, Design Technology, Food, Photography and Textiles P3 (Drama Studio) - Computing, Creative iMedia, Dance, Drama, English, and Music E1 – Geography and Science E2 – Citizenship, Health & Social Care and Religious Studies E3 – History and Sport, Activity & Fitness Do not all go to the nearest room !!!
