Creating an Effective ED/Board Chair Partnership The Power of Self Leadership with Brian Jaudon

Creating a Working Relationship Blueprint Key elements: Your respective organizational visions What does your ideal working relationship look like? Clarify decision-making authority (governance) What are your individual core values? What are your communication preferences? What concerns do you have regarding the relationship? What do you need from each other?

Creating a Working Relationship Blueprint Draft a document with key elements of your working relationship agreement that you can reference and hold yourselves accountable to.

Decision-Making Authority Be clear about where each of your authority begins and ends. Are there any parameters to the decisions the ED can make on their own? Poll: how clear is your governance agreement/structure? (1 to 5)

Individual Core Values Just like organizations, each of us have our unique set of core values – what we feel strongly about and stand for. Knowing the convictions of each other is an important aspect of building a strong working relationship. Poll: Name one value of yours that you’d like to be known and understood?

Communication Preferences This may seem trivial at first glance, but knowing how you each prefer to communicate is a sign of consideration and mutual respect. Poll: what’s your communication preference – email, phone, text or in-person meetings?

When and how often do you meet? Reach agreement on how often you will meet between board meetings, whether those meetings will be virtual or in person, and the purpose of the meetings.

Needs, Requests & Agreements Are there specific things you need from each other that may be worth capturing in your blueprint? You may want to capture these in your blueprint.

What would improve the partnership? As you reflect on your ED/board chair partnership, how would you score the health and effectiveness of your working relationship? (1 to 5 scale). And what would improve that score?
