Establishment v. Tea Party The Republican party is divided between establishment conservatives and grass roots conservatives associated with the Tea Party movement.
Establishment Republicans Perspective: Although establishment conservatives want to limit the size of government, they believe that government can play a positive role in addressing social problems. They recognize that American politics involves compromise. Issues: Low taxes, favorable regulation, reduced government spending, reduced government debt, opposition to healthcare reform Assets: Money, organizational expertise.
Tea Party Republicans Perspective: The US is seriously off track, Obama is a socialist, Obamacare will destroy the economy, and the Republican establishment is so willing to compromise that they are no better than Democrats. Issues: Repeal Obamacare, reduce government spending, oppose tax increases, get tough on undocumented immigrants, reduce government regulation, end abortion, and stop gay marriage. Assets: Activist enthusiasm, organization, wealthy friends, Fox News, talk radio
