Summer Theme Month Project Comments July August Theme: --Peer Leader Training Orientation September -Welcoming Newcomers Preparation for the PL Training Staff Meetings School Open Houses School Registrations -following up with the plan and preparation re the Guest speaker/trainer Food, material, etc.. -SWIS will connect with newcomer families, -dividing tasks among staff -attend as many school staff meetings as possible to educate people on the services of SWIS and how to access. SWIS will make themselves available to the schools -become familiar with welcoming activities in the school and ask to be a part of the event by setting up a table of information. -SWIS will continue to register students in schools.
Fall Theme Month Project Comments October Theme: Health Talk 3 Way Conferences Information Session (parents) Parent Teacher Interviews -dressing for Winter’ posters in the schools. Work with teachers in classrooms to promote dressing appropriately. -SWIS will distribute ‘Parent/Teacher Interview’ videos to LINC classrooms to help parents better understand the process. SWIS will arrange interpreters and meeting times for the youth. -provide general information in EAL classrooms (as needed) for students on health: doctors/dentists/optometrist
Fall Theme cont, Month Project Comments November Theme: Time and Stress Management New Systems Schools Community Organizations Others Time Management/ Stress Management Parent Nights - SWIS will facilitate sessions in several High Schools on time and stress management. These sessions will also include signs of depression and how to deal with conflict. - SWIS will host ‘Parent Night’ in four High Schools for newcomers and their families. We will cover topics such as Canadian School systems, etc. SWIS may also invite guest speakers to Parent Nights (i.e. Guest Speakers from other community agencies, etc.)

Winter Theme Month Project Comments January Theme: Healthy Relationships Canadian School System Introducing SNOW Peer Leader Recruitment Healthy Relationships (please note that the session need to be based on cultural sensitivity and to be organized separately for males and females students) School’s expectations Extra curricular activities Preparation for planning Identifying schools for the event SWIS will facilitate sessions in several High Schools regarding Healthy Relationships. This could include topics such as sexual health information by a public health nurse. SWIS facilitate and organize students information sessions at different schools Consulting and collaborating this session with school staff - SWIS facilitate and organize students information sessions at different schools Invite Peer Leaders from previous years for this introduction.
Winter Theme cont, Month Project Comments February Theme: Theme: -Internet Safety -School Staff Meetings (SWIS Presentation) Staff Meetings Internet Safety Parent Night - attend as many school staff meetings as possible to educate people on the services of SWIS and how to access. utilize police liaisons to educate students on safe internet usage. - SWIS will host ‘Parent Night’ in two High Schools for newcomers and their families. Topics to be announced and based on school’s individual needs.

SWIS will arrange interpreters and meeting times for the youth. -work with school teachers and staff on addressing issues. SWIS continually meet with peer leaders, and providing different workshops frequently meet with students to keep the connection
Spring Month Project Comments April Theme: Theme: -Safe and None violent Schools -Transition Address issues of gangs and drugs Transition into High School -hold numerous sessions on gangs and drugs in several High Schools. Collaborate with other agencies in the city to provide information to youth in regards to gangs and drugs -SWIS will attend high school information sessions. SSWIS will find out when tours are taking place in high schools and take part. May Theme: Bullying SNOW Preparation Address Issues of Bullying -work with school teachers and staff on addressing issues. Collaborate with other agencies in the city to provide information to families about effects of bullying. June Summer and recreation programs Referrals and registration students -SWIS will pass the information to students and refer them to different programs
Summer Theme Month Project Comments July Theme: August Theme: Back To School September Theme: Welcoming Newcomers Based on the organizations decisions SNOW (Student Students Newcomer Orientation Workshop) School Registrations Updating SWIS Information Distributing Brochures. Booklets, Promoting program -to be held for morning or afternoon in several High School Catholic, Public and francophone as a Newcomer Orientation -registering transfer students as well as Newcomers -making necessary revision to all SWIS documents, such as information packages and brochures -providing and allotting the promotional materials in the school site -posting material at school’s hallways, staffroom, EAL class room (this always needs permission form school’s administration)
