Principles of Art

Balance Symmetrical Asymmetrical Radial referring to the weight of the objects/subjects of an artwork being equal on either sides of a piece Symmetrical Asymmetrical Radial

Contrast choosing elements of art that are opposite to create a difference and visual interest in a work of art

Emphasis used in art to make a certain point stand out to the viewer; the place in an artwork where the eye is drawn to the most

Movement referring to how the viewer’s eye moves/looks through the artwork; elements that are repeated or placed in a certain way can help in moving the viewer’s eye around the piece

Pattern the repetition of certain elements of art (shape, form, line, color)

Rhythm where repetition is used to create a cohesiveness within an artwork

Unity Where all elements of the artwork work together to create an aesthetically pleasing piece
