Lesson Objective (Read Over) To type a 1- paragraph objective summary of the ways in which the United States changed in the early part of the 20th Century using vocabulary words.

What is an Objective Summary? An objective summary is a paragraph overview of a topic: Include key supporting facts that connect to the main idea: EXAMPLE: Main Idea=Change in America Supporting Ideas= Industrialization, Immigration, Urbanization. Explain supporting words: Industrialization= Change from making things on farms and at home to factories. Industrialization changed America during the early _____________ because ______________ and _____________. Do not include the words, “Me, my, or I” in your objective summary

How do you make an Objective Summary? Step 1: Begin with a catchy topic sentence that provides an overview of the time period. (EXAMPLES): America changed during the early part of the 20th Century. The time was around the years ____________ and ___________. Step 2: Use your notes to write most of your paragraph. Include 4-5 vocabulary words in bold (Any color) so that they stand out. You must connect your words to the Change in America (EXAMPLE): Immigration was a key factor that led to ______________ in America. Immigration was ______________. Immigration changed America in that it ________________. Step 3: Use Transitional Phrases to make connections between your different words and sentences. (EXAMPLE): As a result, ……. Furthermore, …….. As the years passed, ……………...This had many effects such as…….Later in the decade….. Step 4: End with a concluding phrase or statement that sums up the main idea of the topic in your paragraph. (EXAMPLE): It can be asserted that America went through ____________ and will continue to ____________ because ____________.

Example Objective Summary Main Topic: The 1920’s in America 5 Supporting Vocabulary Words: Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, Flappers, Speak- Easies, Amendment. Transition Words: As a result of this….For example…. In addition…. There were many changes that occurred during the decade of the 1920’s. During the 1920’s many Americans began to blame alcohol for society’s problems. As a result of this , Prohibition began: an amendment was passed banning alcohol. Unfortunately, this had some negative effects. For example, street crime grew as people fought to sell illegal alcohol, and secret bars called speak-easies popped up throughout the nation. In addition, another change involved women. During the Roaring Twenties, women who had recently earned the right to vote were beginning to express their freedom more visibly. For example, women called flappers had a new style of dress and went out more frequently than in the past. Therefore it is evident that the 1920’s was a very exciting time period that involved many changes.
