Warm Up A 2012 study reported that 52.1% of men expected to get a raise or promotion at work this year while only 37.1% of women expected a raise or promotion. Assume both samples consisted of 507 randomly and independently selected workers (507 men and 507 women). Construct and interpret a 90% confidence interval for the difference in the proportion of men vs. women who expected to get a raise or promotion in 2012.
Warm Up - Revisited A 2012 study reported that 52.1% of men expected to get a raise or promotion at work this year while only 37.1% of women expected a raise or promotion. Assume both samples consisted of 507 randomly and independently selected workers (507 men and 507 women). Is this significant evidence that more men than women expected to get a raise or promotion in 2012?
Practice A 2008 study posed the following scenario to 600 randomly selected young adults (ages 19-35) and 300 independently and randomly selected parents of young adults: A young adult is trying to rent their first apartment but does not have enough money for the security deposit and first month’s rent. Will their parents give them a loan? 37% of the young adults and 27% of the parents said the parents would loan the money to the adult children. Is this statistically significant data that the proportion of parents who would actually loan the money is less than the proportion of adult children who think their parents would loan them the money?
Which Paper Airplane Design Is Best Able to Hit a Target? You will be assigned to either build a “Classic Dart” or a “Condor” design. Each person will receive assembly instructions and a template to make the plane. Everyone will build their own plane and test it. We will measure how accurately your plane flies by seeing if you are able to hit a target. We will compare the data for each design to see if there is a statistically significant difference.
Which Paper Airplane Design Is Best Able to Hit a Target? Questions to answer before the experiment: Test: Null Hypothesis: Alternate Hypothesis: Parameters: a =
Making Your Paper Airplane 1) Follow the instructions given and the fold lines marked on the template. 2) The copier shifts the image on the paper. Cut a strip off your template so that the triangle with the word “UP” is flush with the edge. Also trim in the other direction so that the overlap is the same for both sides. 3) After making your plane, cut elevator flaps on the back of the wing. Fold the flaps up or down to help control your flight. 4) After cutting elevator flaps, try a few practice throws. Modify the elevator flap positions to get your plane to fly straight and accurately.
Which Paper Airplane Design Is Best Able to Hit a Target? Everyone will stand behind the start line and take 3 turns to see if their plane hits inside the box or not. Condor is on one side and Dart on the other. Stay out of the way of the throwers! Make a tally mark under HIT or MISS for each of your throws.
Which Paper Airplane Design Is Best Able to Hit a Target? Using the data from everyone in the class, conduct a 2 proportion z test to determine if we have statistically significant evidence that the accuracy of the Classic Dart is different from the accuracy of the Condor.
