BES: Environmental Health Turn in your worksheet homework now! BES: Environmental Health Please grab the handout and get out your journal!

Warm Up 4-1-19 What does “designed for the dump” mean when talking about electronics? How does this affect our environment?

Are there any new survey questions you want to ask? Mod 3 Discussion 4/1/19 Besides Toxins from Queen City Farms site and electronics being dumped into landfills… Write questions and answer in your journal. Be ready to discuss! What are some other possible sources of toxins in Maple Valley? In the air? Water? Soil? How do you think toxins get into our environment? What local environmental issues are you aware of? Do any of these issues relate to toxins? Are there any new survey questions you want to ask?

Success Criteria: What will I be able to do? I can investigate different ways to remediate (clean up) toxic waste spilled/dumped in our environment.

Zinc, Copper, Mercury and Lead…oh my! In this part of the module, you will work on a team to research a common toxin in our environment. You will then collect water samples from your local community to test for toxins, including the one you researched. After you complete the water tests, look at the results and try to figure out the source of any toxins you found in the water. Zinc Teams 1 & 2 & 3 Copper Teams 4 & 5 Mercury Teams 6 & 7 Lead Teams 8 & 9

Grab your computer and log in: https://educurious.instructure.com Directions: Please go to Lesson 3.1: Toxins in our Environment Get the handout “Assignment 3.1: Chemical Case Study” (you will tape this in your journal) Scroll down to Alternative Case Studies. Please read the “blue” version. If you are not a strong reader feel free to read the regular version. Fill out the columns on your lesson document for your assigned heavy metal.

Become the expert and share your knowledge! Discuss with your team after taking notes about your chemical so you feel confident to teach another classmate. We will move into teaching groups. Get with three other students who have information on the three chemicals you do not. Each person should review their chemical while their “students” take notes.

Why should we care about this? Chemical Case Study Discussion 4/1/19 Do you think that anything you do personally in your life contributes to any of these four chemicals being in the environment? Why should we care about this? How can we prevent it from entering the environment?

Let’s summarize what we’ve done so far. Activity What did we do? What did we learn? How does it relate to the final product? Launch Mod 1: Intro. to Environmental Health Mod 2: Toxins in the Environment Mod 3: Bioaccumulation & Biomagnification Researched Queen City Farms Toxic Site My neighborhood site Chemicals were dumped. There are lots of micro spills close to home. Now that we know there are toxins in our water and soil, what do we do? Videos on PCB, VOC & Heavy Metals Pre-Test How toxins enter our environment from materials we are around and use daily. We need to know how these toxins enter the environment. We can use fast plants to investigate heavy metal toxins. Video on Fast Plants Video on electronics in environment w/ handout Fast plants take up heavy metals. Electronics are filling up landfills-leaking toxins. Toxins are harmful and not easily dealt with by living things, not easy to get rid of them. We may be able to use these metals in our investigation. Living things can’t Read case studies on lead, mercury, copper, zinc.

Bring in a water sample from around your home or neighborhood to test on Wednesday!
