Physical Properties of matter By: Mr. Cruz
Bell ringer Explain the difference between a scientific theory and a scientific Law (provide at least three differences for each) True or false: My hypothesis was proven (if false correct statement) Can a scientific theory ever become a Scientific Law?
What are the physical properties of matter? A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance Example: Mass Density Volume Hardness Shininess Color Ability to attract a magnet
What is Matter? Anything in the universe that take up space is known as Matter, makes up anything you can feel, smell or touch.
How do we measure matter? Weight A measure of the force of gravity on you. Mass The amount of matter in an object Mass does not change with location Volume
What is volume? Volume The amount of space that matter occupies Volume = Length x Width x Height Units = cm x cm x cm = cm3
What is Density and how is it Measured? A measure of the mass of a material in a given volume Density= Mass/Volume
Now you try? What is the density of a liquid with a mass of 17.4 grams and a volume of 20 mL?
Bell ringer What is the difference between mass and weight? Provide three physical properties of matter Write the formula of volume and look at the picture on the right. Solve the volume, use the right units (cm)
