Tuesday, February 25th HW: Read 915-919 in your textbook. Construct timeline for “Japan Seeks An Empire” (5 events) * Interwar Year Test Thursday/Friday! Aim: What were the causes and effects of Japanese imperialism? Do Now: Identify at least 3 reasons why stronger countries imperialize weaker countries.

Due to its geography Japan lacks natural resources and raw materials.

What policy did Japan follow prior to the 19th century? Who travelled to Japan in 1853 and 1854 and convinced the Japanese to open up ports for trade? What is the period of time in which Japan modernized known as? How did Japan change during the Meiji Restoration?

Who was the Sino-Japanese War between? What were the Chinese and Japanese fighting over? What did Japan gain as a result of the Sino-Japanese War?

Who was the Russo-Japanese War between? What were the Russians and Japanese fighting over? Who won the Russo- Japanese War? How did the Japanese imperialists treat the Koreans?

After the Great Depression, military leaders gained support and control of Japan. Emperor Hirohito

Militarists planned a Pacific empire that included a conquered China. Empire would provide Japan with raw materials and markets for its goods. Empire would also provide Japan with room for its rising population.

In 1931, Japanese army attacked and seized Manchuria. Japanese army set up a puppet government there and called it Manchukuo.

Japanese attack on Manchuria was the first challenge to the League of Nations. League of Nations protests Japan’s actions. League proves to be ineffective as it has no military to enforce its decrees.

Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) Japanese forces swept into northern China Nanjing fell to Japanese in 1937 Japanese killed tens of thousands of captured soldiers and civilians (Rape of Nanjing)
