Education in America Franklin D Roosevelt is elected president Several acts and laws are passed that facilitate people with disabilities to receive proper education History of disability rights enter curricula 1932 1935 1960 – 1980 1990 2006 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Americans with Disabilities Act becomes a law Signing of the Social Security Act

There are several historical factors that have influenced the American educational system over the last centuries, being the most important the following: 1934: Franklin D Roosevelt is elected president. He became the first public figure with disabilities. 1935: The signing of the Social Security Act established permanent assistance to people with disabilities. 1960 through 1980: There were several measures and acts that were passed and that facilitated the access or enrollment of people with disabilities to public schools. Some of them are: First Accessible Standard published. Funding set aside for disability infrastructure. The 1968 Act requires accessible buildings. The 1973 Act prohibits discrimination to public institutions. In 1974 the last “Ugly laws are repealed”. In 1978 the National Council on Disability is established. In 1988 the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act is passed. 1990: the American with Disabilities Act becomes a law. The most important civil rights law since Title 504. this Act bring together disability-specific organizations, advocates and supporters together. 2006: History of Disability Rights Enter Curricula. This is the first bill that requires that students from kindergarten to high school to learn the history of the disabilities movement and Acts.
