Converting Fraction to Decimal To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). If a fraction converts into a decimal that eventually stops, we’ll call it a terminating decimal. Otherwise, if a fraction converts into a decimal with a repeating block (group of numbers), we’ll call it a repeating decimal.

Practice converting the following fractions into decimals Practice converting the following fractions into decimals. Then, state what type of decimal it is. 1. 3 8 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375 terminating (it ends) 2. 𝟑 1 16 1 ÷ 16 = 0.0625, so it’s 3.0625 terminating 3. 5 6 4. 4 9 4 ÷ 9 = 0.444444…. repeating (it doesn’t end) 5. 𝟏𝟑 𝟒 6. 15 𝟕 𝟗

Converting a Decimal to a Fraction To convert a terminating decimal to a fraction, put the decimal over one and multiply the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) by ten until there is no longer a decimal in the numerator (top). Then, simplify your fraction. To convert a repeating decimal to a fraction, put the repeating digit(s) (block) over the same number of 9s. Then, simplify your fraction.

PRACTIVE CONVERTING THE FOLLOWING TERMINATING AND REPEATING DECIMALS INTO FRACTIONS. 0.35 .35 1 ∙ 10 10 = 3.5 10 ∙ 10 10 = 35 100 = 7 25 (DIVIDE THE TOP AND BOTTOM BY 5, THEIR COMMON FACTOR) 8. 0.275 8.12 8 .12 1 ∙ 10 10 =8 1.2 10 ∙ 10 10 =8 12 100 =8 6 50 = 8 3 25 (DIVIDE THE TOP AND BOTTOM BY 2 AND THEN BY 2 AGAIN SINCE THEY ARE BOTH EVEN NUMBERS) 0.8 8 9 = 8 9 (YOU CAN’T REDUCE THIS DOWN ANY MORE!) 11. 0.72 12. 5.02
