What is Genius Hour? http://safeshare.tv/v/ss57a64ed3e258d https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMFQUtHsWhc

Objectives of Genius Hour To allow students to explore their own passions and to promote their empowerment through the planning, development, and presentation of a product that is reflective of student knowledge and understanding GENIUS HOUR is designed to provide an outlet for students to develop ownership of knowledge related to topics of interest and to present what they learn through project development to an audience. We will work on project presentation skills, citing evidence, and we will foster creativity through student choice of topic and project product displays.

Genius Hour Rules You will spend 20% of our class time over the second semester working on what we will call, “Genius Hour”.    You must work ALONE.  This is about conjuring YOUR inner genius, creativity, passions, and intelligence.  Choose a project that is new to you and something you would not normally do in another academic class.  You must produce a product, invention or achieve some sort of goal.  If, at any moment, you feel lost, overwhelmed, or uninspired, you must set a meeting with me to find a solution.  FAILURE IS AN OPTION. Simply learning from your mistakes teaches you so much!

Over the next 4 months you will… Develop a deep understanding of a new content Create at least 10 blog posts about your process/updates on your project Create a technology presentation over your research Create a product that demonstrates your understanding of the content researched

Blog Posts Requirements: You will be required to make a minimum of 8 blog posts over the course of the next 4 months Your first blog post will be introducing your idea, invention, design, creation, passion or modification to your peers. *The rest of the blog posts will be updates on your process and what you have accomplished at that point.

Student Examples 2017 The evolution of special effects make-up How business and finance has grown and advanced over time The history of rap music Space: black holes and other mysteries 3D Printing Vietnamese cooking and recipe book Supporting the seniors: a durable planner to help seniors live a healthy and active lifestyle The history of war The all seeing stick: Creating a walking stick with IR sensors

Consider the Following Your topic must be ‘google-able’ Your topic must include research! The purpose of Genius Hour is to develop a deep understanding of a new content that you may be unfamiliar with. Must be accessible/presentable to the public Your product must be thorough- it should have all of your information, research, etc… An infographic does not work for this project

Genius Hour: Brainstorm Determine your passions by creating a mind map that explores your interests Once you have determined your passion, use the essential question guide to help narrow down the essential question you would like to answer during your genius hour project

Genius Hour Part One: Proposal Topic: (What overall topic do you wish to study? This can be one word.) Driving Question: (What question do you want to answer in your research?) Research Method: Final Product:

Genius Hour Part Two: Essential Questions LIST 5 ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE INVESTIGATED. (The essential questions support the driving question/project topic) (20 points per each question- thoroughness is required!)

Genius Hour Part Three: Background Research You will create a digital presentation that explains your research of your chosen topic.
