Dress code in Islam Baker Abdalhamid of 11A

I… Love Fitnah Hate the Truth Pray without Wudu Have something Allah will never have

Before I start… إن كنت تدري إنها لمصيبة وإن كنت لا تدري فالمصيبة أعظم Nothing is personal Know the knowledge and have the intention to abide Religion is over culture or tradition. (eg. Prophet Ibrahim AS and father) (People in the past blaming their fathers) إن كنت تدري إنها لمصيبة وإن كنت لا تدري فالمصيبة أعظم If anything I say is wrong, Dr. Eid or Sheikh Abdul-Shaheed please correct me

Does Islam tell us to be ugly? NO Allah SWT encourages us to dress cleanly and beautifully: “Children of Adam, wear your best clothes to every mosque.” Allah SWT promises believers who wear nice appropriate clothing an exclusive clothing in Jannah: “Say, ‘Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah, which He has brought forth for His servants and the good things, clean and pure, which Allah has provided for them?’ Say, ‘They are [lawful] for the believers in the present life but they shall be exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection.’ Thus We explain Our signs for a people who understand.”

Purpose of clothing 1. To cover parts of the body that must be covered in front of others especially private parts. Simply Modesty! (Story of Prophet Adam AS and Hawwa) “Children of Adam, We have sent down clothing to you to conceal your private parts.” 2. To protect us from heat or cold that might harm us “He has made shelters for you in the mountains and He has made garments for you to protect you from the heat and garments to protect you from each other’s violence. In that way He perfects His blessing on you so that hopefully you may devote yourselves to him.”

EXCEPT… The General Rule All types of clothing and adornment are allowed in Islam and halal. EXCEPT…

1. Clothing that reveals the private parts “Children of Adam! We have sent down clothing to you to conceal your private parts.” For men, the minimum amount to be covered is between the navel and the knee. 1(some scholars say over the knee is ok outside prayer but majority say no) incident with Othman… 2(Revealing shoulders and chest area is makrooh) For women who are in the presence of men not related to them, they must cover their bodies except for their faces and hands. 1(feet, according to some narrations)

2. Not loose enough to cover the body properly. For both men and women, skin-tight and see through clothing is NOT allowed. AKA needs to be flat not showing the shape of the body The Prophet Muhammad SAW warned us: “Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "There are two types of people who will be punished in Hell and whom I have not seen: men having whips like the tails of cows and they will be beating people with them, and, women who will be dressed but appear to be naked, inviting to evil; and they themselves will be inclined to it. Their heads will appear like the humps of the Bactrian camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Jannah and they will not smell its fragrance which is perceptible from such and such a distance."”. (Muslim)

3. Dressing like or imitating the opposite sex This imitation may be extended to include imitation in the manner of speaking, gait and movement, for Allah’s Messenger(PBUH) cursed men who wear women’s clothes and women who wear men’s clothes, (Sunnan Abu Daawood: 4098). He also cursed men who make themselves look like women and women who make themselves look like men, (Saheeh Al-Bukhari: 5546). Islam looks at biological and emotional differences and gives us a code according to Fitrah Things have changed (Women show and man cover)

4. Imitation of others Omar RAA narrated that Rasuallalah SAW said “He who imitates a people (in their actions) he is one of them” If you dress good because of someone it is not bad… This imitation extends to wearing clothing of religious significance. Imitation of this type is a sign of weakness and lack of confidence in the truth one adopts. Does not include dominant clothing in a country (Prophet wore clothing Quraysh wore, except if they were Haram) Our example…

5. Clothing that is worn with pride It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) observed: None shall enter the Fire (of Hell) who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of Iman and none shall enter Paradise who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride..” (Saheeh Muslim) Therefore, Islam prohibits clothing worn for the sake of pride In the hadith the Prophet warns those who have a garment that drags (Abu Bakr’s question) Libaas Ashu-hrah (Clothing made just to attract attention with colour or sound)

“It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar said: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: ‘Whoever wears a garment of pride and vanity in this world, Allah will clothe him in a garment of humiliation on the Day of Resurrection, then set it ablaze.” (Sunan Ibn Maajah / Hasan)

6. Silk Clothing or adorned with Gold or silk for men “Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "He who wears silk clothes in this life shall not wear them in the Hereafter."[Al-Bukhari and Muslim] (By silk is meant pure silk obtained from the cocoon of the silkworm) Hudhaifah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) prohibited us from eating or drinking in gold or silver utensils and from wearing silk and brocade, or sitting on (anything made from) them. (Al-Bukhari) Wearing them or eating in them So wearing pure gold is Haram for men (not the colour)

7. Extravagant clothing It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib, from his father, that his grandfather said: "Eat, give charity and dress yourselves, but without being extravagant, and without showing off." (Sunan An-Nasaa’ee / Da’if) Something a rich person can buy considering it normal, may be extravagant for a poor person. However, we all know what’s right (buying expensive stuff to show-off, buying something then wanting to replace it…)

8. Women’s dress should not be attracting men’s attention The Quran prescribes how women should wear to protect them and so they may observe modesty. Not only that, a female who observes this will be submitting to Allah SWT as he is the most wise. Allah says in the Quran “Tell the male believers to lower their gaze and guard their private parts” So it is also for men “Bedizen not yourselves with the bedizenment of the Time of Ignorance"  Surat Al-Ahzab

Allah then says "And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment (not natural) except that which [necessarily] appears thereof (To not get attention of men and so husband only looks at wife- study) and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed."
