Colony morphology The term “ colony morphology ” refers to the visible characteristics of a colony. However , colony morphology is not a reliable way to identify bacteria , because as many different types of bacteria have similar colony morphology.

The size of the colony can be a useful characteristic for identification. The diameter of a representative colony may be measured in millimeters . Tiny colonies are referred to as punctiform.

Margin – The margin or edge of a colony may be an important characteristic in identifying an organism. .(entire , filiform , curled … )
