Today’s Topics Review of mock examination Case studies (Group exercises) Write up of practical exercise Course review

Review of Mock Examinations Questions? Students have a better learning outcome if each question is answered in class either by the group (preferably) or the lecturer. Ask if there are any questions rarely obtains a response. It may not be practical to go through the whole mock examination but an attempt should be made to address those questions that students would be expected to find difficult.

Case Studies – Group Exercises Review the workplace situations and identify all potential routes of exposure. Design appropriate control strategies for the sites to minimise exposures to appropriate levels Prepare a short presentation (3 overheads maximum) that highlights the issues, what needs to be done, what you need to do it and what are the benefits Show the video of these two situations to the class. Ask them to identify all exposure sources and then develop a control strategy for each site. Finally ask them to develop a short presentation suitable for delivery to senior management which highlights the issues, how they can be controlled, what resources are required and what benefits arise from do this work. Have each group present their case to the “management team’ and provide feedback on what swayed you to go with a particular approach. Ensure all members of the group participate in the presentation sessions and ask questions of those who don’t.

Write up of Practical Exercise Independently prepare a report on one of the practical exercises Can use student manual for guidance Use the data you collected from yesterday’s exercise Ask the class to independently prepare a report on one of the practical exercises. You may wish to introduce an added senarion so they have to do some interpretation of data etc The aim is to see if they understand what they did in the practicals

Course Review Workplace control principles Designing control strategies Understanding sources of contaminants Ventilation systems Principles of containment Personal protective equipment Administrative elements Briefly summarise each section. Ask the class the key learning's they have gained in regard to the control of hazardous substances. List the learning's on a whiteboard and highlight any that are absent
