3rd declension NOUNS Since most of the 3rd declension ADJECTIVE endings look a lot like 3rd declension NOUN endings, it may help to start by lookinig at the NOUNS first

-* -es -is -um -i -ibus -em -es -e -ibus -* -a -is -um -i -ibus 3rd declension NOUNS masculine/feminine -* -es -is -um -i -ibus -em -es -e -ibus neuter -* -a -is -um -i -ibus -e -ibus

The truth of the matter is… If you learn the endings from the previous chart, you will most likely be able to deal with 3rd declension adjectives. There will be some endings that are not correct, but they are not the most common ones. However, if you want precision…

3rd declension adjectives: masculine/feminine -* -es -is -ium -i -ibus -em -es neuter -* -ia -is -ium -i -ibus

-e -ibus 3rd declension NOUNS: -* -es -is -um -i -ibus -em -es -* -a masculine/feminine -* -es -is -um -i -ibus -em -es -e -ibus neuter -* -a -is -um -i -ibus -e -ibus

Use 3rd declension adjectives like 1st-2nd adjectives. To determine the declension of a noun you need to know the nominative/genitive singular of the noun. (This assumes you know your charts too!!!!) To get the base of a noun you drop the genitive singular ending. Adjectives of the 1st-2nd decl. have a word ending in –a in the vocabulary list. Adjectives of 3rd declension have a word ending in –is in the vocabulary list To get the base of an adjective drop the –a or -is

Choose the correct vocabulary words for the noun and the adjective. Determine the declension of the noun. Determine the base of the noun. Determine the case and number needed and select the correct ending from the correct chart. Determine the gender of the noun. Determine the declension of the adjective. Get the base of the adjective by dropping the -a or the –is Use the correct chart and pick the same gender, number and case as the noun.

I have a fast horse. equus, equi celer, celeris, celere

equos celer______ (equus, equi) bovibus ingent_____ (bos, bovis (f.)) Put the correct ending on the adjective. Notice that the nouns are from ANY declension. You will need to determine the gender, number and case of the noun. equos celer______ (equus, equi) bovibus ingent_____ (bos, bovis (f.)) ancillarum omn_____ (ancilla, ancillae) dominum senec_____ (dominus, domini) sorores simil________ (soror, sororis)

Nominative singular 3Termination (3T)- Some nominative singular forms have three distinct endings m. -er f. -is n. -e celer, celeris, celere celer equus – fast horse m. celeris bos – fast cow f. celere bellum – fast war n.

Nominative singular 1 termination (1T)-Some nominative singulars have one form for masculine/feminine and neuter You use the first word listed in the vocabulary. It is the nominative singular form. The second word listed is the genitive singular. There is no one form. This is the we see in the nominative singular.

1 termination audax, audacis audax vir – bold man audax femina - bold woman audax bellum – bold war

3t – three words 2t – two words (2nd word ends in e) 1t – two words (2nd one ends in –is)

celer, celeris, celere (3t) brevis, breve (2te) audax, audacis (1t)

Use the vocabulary list and… identify which 3rd decl. adjectives are: 3T (3) 2T (e) 1T
