In fourteen hundred and ninety two Columbus sailed the Ocean blue . . .

Who was Christopher Columbus? Born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. Columbus had three younger brothers At the age of twenty he decided to become a sailor. He died on May 20, 1506.

Where Did Christopher Columbus Explore? Africa King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain paid for the exploration. On August 3, 1492, Columbus left Palos, Spain and headed westward hoping to find a route to Asia . On October 12, Columbus reached islands off the coasts of North and South America. He thought he was in India because he did not know the continents of North and South America existed.

The Purpose of His Voyage Spain wanted to gain wealth by sharing in the Asian spice trade. Columbus wanted to make a fortune and spread his religion of Christianity. The earth was known to be round and he wanted to make a quicker voyage to the east by going west.

The results of Columbus’ Exploration Columbus is important because his explorations made Europeans more aware of the New World. Helped to encourage more exploration of North and South America in the 1500s. Marked the beginning of lasting contact between Europe, Africa and the Americas. Founded the first Spanish Colony called Hispaniola (present- day Haiti and the Dominican Republic.) Many Native Americans, which he called “Indians,” were enslaved, died from European diseases, and had their land stolen.

Biography He was born in 1470 in Valladolid, Spain. Died in 1528 because a storm struck his fleet in the Gulf of Mexico and he did not survive.

Where Did he explore ? He explored land along the Gulf Coast from Northern Mexico to Florida Peninsula. He planned on going to the Florida peninsula. He ended up in Florida but his ships landed somewhere else because Narvaez described the wrong Harbor to them. He and his people were stranded.

Why Did panfilo Explore? He explored for gold and glory for himself and for Spain. He found nothing. He gained control of land and people. The effect on those people was bad because they always fought with the Indians.

What HAPPENED NEXT ? When they were stranded they built a boat to find land. A terrible storm struck their boat and Narvez died. Some of his people survived and went back to Spain.
