William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. Eldest of eight children, probably educated at the local grammar school. leading member of the theatre troupe known as 'The Lord Chamberlain's Men‘ - King James I granted it the right to perform at his court, became known as 'The King's Men'. wrote more than 30 plays for 'The King's Men = most important theatre company in the country. very successful and wealthy in his time, and his work has remained very popular ever since. Many people believed in witchcraft in the Elizabethan era, and thought that witches worked for the devil. People were very religious. They believed that the devil was very real and thought that he wanted to make men and women evil through dark magic - SIN.  In 1604, witchcraft became illegal, and if you were accused of being a witch you would be put to death by hanging, burning or drowning.  It was believed that Witches could: see into the future; create storms, hail, thunder and lightning; sink ships; stop the sun and change night into day and day into night. They could cause the death of their enemies, and could make themselves invisible. In order to work their charms they would open graves and steal parts of the bodies to make potions. Women were seen as second class citizens and their role was to reproduce – powerless. Lady Macbeth’s ambition might have angered a contemporary audience! Lady M goes against typical female character – not maternal and would change sex if she could have power of males – “unsex me here”

Write down appropriate quotes/annotations in a different colour next to your notes! Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850. His family included engineers, scientists, a professor of philosophy, and a religious minister - scientific and religious influences are reflected in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Stevenson had serious lung problems as a child – he read a great deal about travel and adventure. A combination of his love of adventure and ill health led him to spend many years as a writer travelling the world in search of a climate that was healthier than Britain's. In 1859, when Stevenson was nine years old, Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species. This book became famous for introducing the Theory of Evolution to the public. Many people saw it as an attack on religion, because the book made it impossible to believe that God created the world in seven days. Darwin put forward the theory that all life, including humans, has evolved from more primitive forms. The transformation of Jekyll to the ape-like Hyde links to this idea of a primitive nature inside us. The book's release came at a time when many people saw science and a belief in religion and the supernatural as being at odds with each another. Many felt they had to choose between the two. And many believed that science had become dangerous and was meddling in matters which only God had control over. This is what Jekyll does in the novel. Closely linked to the Victorians' increasing sense of the conflict between science and religion was the idea that humans have a dual nature: explainable versus the inexplicable; the natural versus the supernatural; good versus evil.
