United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 6 Nairobi work programme on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change Assist all Parties: to improve their understanding and assessment of impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to make informed decisions on practical adaptation actions based on sound scientific, technical and socio-economic basis Central knowledge sharing hub and learning platform on adaptation under the UNFCCC Links the needs and priorities of Parties with activities undertaken by diverse organizations 6 6

Phase 1 Phase 2

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 8 Needs, priorities, opportunities for further actions identified under the Nairobi work programme Climate-related risks and extreme events Adaptation planning and practices Socio-economic information Methods and tools, Data and observations Climate modelling, scenarios and downscaling Integrating climate risk management and DRR into national policies Economic diversification to adverse effects of climate change Advancing the integration of approaches to adaptation planning 8 8

Cross-cutting messages Enhancement of enabling environment is critical Development and dissemination of knowledge and information need to be strengthened at all levels Integration of adaptation considerations across all sectors and planning efforts at all levels is essential Consideration of social aspects needs to be promoted Trans-disciplinary Multi-scale Multi-stakeholder Multi-driver Decision making under uncertainties Regional cooperation plays a key role

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Focus of the 2nd phase (June 2008 ~ Dec 2010) Promote activities by regional centres and networks Enhance outreach efforts aimed at practitioners at the national and subnational levels in developing countries Activities on education, training and awareness-raising (excerpts of mandates from FCCC/SBSTA/2008/6, para 26-35)

Nairobi work programme Global Adaptation Network Effective knowledge dissemination Catalyze information on adaptation at regional, national and subnational levels under the NWP Meet the increasing needs of developing countries for adaptation data, knowledge, technology and policy support In the course of the implementation of the NWP, Parties to the UNFCCC have clearly acknowledged the importance of climate change information and effective knowledge dissemination as an indispensible enabling factor for enhanced action on adaptation. Parties have repeatedly identified the need to make relevant information available to stakeholders at the regional, national and community levels. In response to these calls for action, UNEP has pledged actions on enhancing knowledge gaps to meet the increasing needs of developing countries for adaptation-related data and knowledge for technology and policy support. The UNEP Climate Change Adaptation Network is an initiative of this action pledge. The NWP could greatly benefit from, and contribute to, the development of this Network. But we hope Network goes beyond knowledge sharing, and contributes to build concrete adaptive capacity of stakeholders at national and community levels in Asia to assist adaption to climate change. The Global Adaptation Network is responding to this call for action in the 2nd phase of the NWP by pledging concrete action at the twenty-eighth session of the Subsidiary bodies in June 2008. Calls for actions Pledged actions under the NWP
