My Journey Home Foley Recreation

The Task I was told to note and recreate noises I heard on my journey home, I get the 16 bus home, So I recreated those sounds.

Sound Map Coat Rustling Wheels Squeaking Bus Rattles Two Women Talking Bus Engine ME Cars Revving Bell Ringing Car Horn Bag Rustling Ticket Guard Bus doors squeak open Bus Doors Hiss

Running Bus Ambience On a bus you will hear the bus itself running, like the engine whir and the parts of it rattling about, without this noise on a bus scene, it may as well be pointless, to get this effect, I combined the sounds of my laptop whirring, my microwave going, both my laptop and television running a CD and my washing machine at different speeds and pitches, combined with jingles of my keys and a spray from my deodorant, to make the running bus ambient track.

Other Cars If a bus is on a road, you will also hear other cars go past, this is a semi important sound in a bus scene, as it shows the bus is on a busy road and really in motion, to create the effect of a car engine, I put a piece of paper to my mouth and blew, for a car horn, I had to make the sound myself and speed it up slightly to make it sound more authentic.

Dialogue Dialogue on a bus is what makes it feel alive, unless you’re in a zombie film, there will be people on a bus, all I did for this track was record myself saying different things and overlapped them all, to create a packed bus feel.

Background noise As with any large group of people, you will have a large amount of background noise, whether it be typing, coats rustling, coughing, anything, again, this is what makes a scene feel moving, as people aren’t constantly still, I made coughing, sneezing and sniffing noises, as it is currently winter, I made some typing sounds, as there would probably be commuters on busses with laptops, I also shook my bag a bit, as the road is quite bumpy, all to show the different people in motion.

The Final Product I put all the ambient and sound effect tracks together and had this as the final product.

Software/Hardware I used To Record the audio I used a Blue Snowball condenser mic To edit my audio I used Techsmith’s Camtasia
