C-Notes and You A brief presentation over the first AVID initiative to be implemented school-wide.

C-Notes Have your students draw lines on their paper to fit the example to the right The top of the paper is used for labeling information including their name, the subject, the chapter, or any other pertinent information The left side of the notes can be used for having them right down questions or key terms that they may have as they go through the lesson The right side can be used for their taking the notes you want them to throughout class, or writing down examples of problems for homework later. The reflection or summary should be filled out ten minutes after the lesson is finished as a means of showing they have the ability to retain the material Labeling Questions Notes Reflection

Beginning C-Notes Notice the key words that are on the Left hand side, along with examples for clarification. The right side contains the details for each key term as well as personalized entries that the students will be able to look back on and study. The page is not cluttered with a lot of unnecessary writing. Summary at the bottom was done at the end of the lesson and only contains information from the notes. No copying text books, requires higher level thinking

Advanced C-Notes Math notes can contain word problems on the left for them to practice their reasoning and sequencing skills. Not only does right side have definitions, but also a more detailed example for comparing and contrasting. The student is able to recognize issues they are having with the lesson as well as identify where they need to concentrate and improve their understanding.

Accomplished C-Notes

Computerized C-Notes You can split the sections of the chapter into organized frames that prompt students to fill in answers You can have them leave room to answer short questions Makes asking them for the main idea much easier

Example for Diagrams How do the ticks find the cattle? Why don’t the ticks usually kill their host? How could tick infestations in cattle impact humans?

Traditional versus C-Notes User-defined organization Records info efficiently and selectively Interaction dependent on system May be reviewed periodically 2-3 x Optional revision - study groups? 3-part organization Creates schemata Creates higher-level thinking questions Creates summaries Review & revise notes 5-6 x Uses as study guides Jigsaw for study groups Holds students accountable for their learning
