What is Advanced Placement (AP)? Advanced Placement (AP) courses are High School courses following The College Board’s curriculum. An AP exam is given at the end of the course, and college credit may be earned based on the score of the exam received and the score’s interpretation by the received college or university. The score of the exam itself does not indicate what level of college credit is given. Again, receiving schools determine college credit. Because AP courses are on a college-level curriculum, AP grades typically carry a heavier GPA weight.

What is Pre-Advanced Placement (PAP)? Pre-Advanced Placement (PAP) take place in the middle school and also on the high school level. Middle school Pre-AP courses are designed to develop student skills needed to be successful when they get to high school. In the middle school levels, Pre-AP courses are designed to be more in- depth and require more higher-order thinking than standard on-level classes. These classes are more rigorous than on-level classes. Students who have high interest in the content area and are willing to work harder, study more, and take advantage of the learning opportunities are able to do well. For middle school students, no additional GPA weight is added.

Open Enrollment Pre-AP courses are open enrollment. Students and parents may register for PAP courses just as they would any other classes. It is recommended that students carry a high “B” average, around 88%, as an indicator of future success. Students are expected to carry a “C” average or higher to remain in PAP courses. Students may drop PAP courses in week 5 and at the semester. Some courses may require a summer project. Incomplete projects are not cause for dropping the course.

How to Be Successful in Pre-AP Courses Keep a calendar and plan your study time and keep track of other activities like athletics, band, theater, clubs, etc. Plan and maintain a study space at home. Turn off social media and all non-educational electronic devices during study time. Set up a routine and follow it. Build steady study habits while you are in middle school so that your experience in high school will benefit. Teacher tutorials and the ACE program are available for additional academic support.

Middle School Pre-AP Math – there is more to think about before registering. 6th grade PAP combines TEKS from 6th and 7th grades. Students take 6th grade STAAR. All 7th grade TEKS are not taught here. 7th grade PAP combines TEKS from 7th and 8th grade. Students take 8th grade STAAR. 8th grade Algebra I takes the high school End of Course (EOC) exam and earns high school credit. Does NOT count for GPA. 9th grade takes Geometry or PAP Geometry. 10th grade takes Algebra II or PAP Algebra II. 11th & 12th grades options: Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, and Dual Credit Statistics and Business Decision Making and other options not currently offered.

How to Be Successful in Pre-AP Courses Do the reading. Do the writing. Do the thinking. In short, do everything your teachers ask you to do. You will build academic skills as well as soft skills like organization, time management, and GRIT. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

How to Be Successful in Pre-AP Courses These courses will stretch your thinking. Frustration will likely occur. Keep calm and talk with your teachers, counselors, and your parents. Develop your ability to manage the course load and also your life. Learning to do this in middle school will help you in the future. Keep calm and breathe. No one is perfect. Just do your best, and make a plan for the rest!
