What needs to be capitalized? Capitalization

Rule #1-7 1. Capitalize the first word in a sentence. 2. Capitalize the pronoun “I”. 3. Capitalize proper nouns (specific names of people, places, or things). 4. Capitalize proper adjectives. 5. Capitalize initials. 6. Capitalize specific areas geographically but not directions. 7. Capitalize days of week and months but not the seasons.

Rules #8-12 8. Capitalize any title that comes before a person’s name even if it is abbreviated. 9. Capitalize words used as names or part of names. 10. Capitalize the important words in titles-not unimportant words of 3 letters or less. 11. Capitalize historical events or documents. 12. Capitalize the names of languages, races, nationalities, and religion.

Rules #13-15 13. Capitalize acronyms. (An acronym is a word formed by the first, or first few, letters of words in a long name of an organization.) 14. Capitalize initialisms. (An initialism is similar to acronym, but a word is not formed from the letters.) 15. Capitalize organizations, political parties, institutions, government bodies, business firms, and teams.

Rule #16-21 16. Capitalize specific planets and other astronomical bodies. 17. Capitalize specific names of buildings, structures, bridges, and monuments. 18. Capitalize specific names of planes, trains, ships, and spacecraft. 19. Capitalize school courses followed by a number or names a language. 20. Capitalize specific names of documents, awards, and laws. 21. Capitalize names of works such as novels, magazines, poetry, television shows, movies, songs, short stories, plays, newspapers, etc.
