NYC Public Recycling Can Epidemic Monet Ametefe, Danielle Casagrande and Marvin Williams

Map Data This map shows the number of public recycling in NYC Total of 544 bins through out all five boroughs However, this map doesn’t include the countless number of trash cans that are located in the subways and other stations around NYC

Map Data Manhattan has the most recycling bins with 183 and Staten Island has the least with only 42 There are major gaps in areas that have no area garbage can which can lead to littering problems in communities that can snowball into bigger issues

This set of data offered the most information that interested us as we were discussing how easy it seems to remedy the trash problem in NYC On average the city handles about 12,000 tons of garbage a day in NYC, with that amount of trash that is collected compared to the amount of cans available is a huge gap Each person on average creates 25 pounds of garbage a day in NYC As stated before, these can counts don’t include the underground cans which have an issue within themselves Yearly, there are hundreds of track fires that contribute to thousands of train delays – all which could have been prevented Data Choice

Environmental Significance The detrimental affects carry across a multitude of areas Appearance of the city, air quality, water pollution all which effect the food we consume because of the surrounding areas that are harvested and irrigated for us This map data shows the extreme lack of cans around the city Even in densely populated areas, there can be more placed Other locations lacking any presence of cans have to be tended to Food Consumption Ecosystems Water Pollution Air Quality

A larger conscious effort needs to be put towards getting rid of the trash that is infiltrating our city We should also have a campaign geared towards New Yorkers and tourists to motivate us to carry our garbage with us rather than litter We can use newer technology to help measure this by using the air quality levels in certain areas Smart Trash Can Technology which is a system that alerts NYC Dept of Sanitation know when each can fill up and can no longer collect trash We can figure out which areas need more attention and which ones can go without less cans so we can focus on the areas that need the most help We can offer personal garbage stations in the higher trafficked areas where people can pull small biodegradable trash bags, they can carry in their purses to rid of their thrash throughout the day if they plan on moving around a lot Small garbage droboxes should be placed on all train cars to offer a place to dump garbage rather than under or on seats City Remediations
