1990 February 24th

First elections  The first free elections to the Lithuanian Supreme Court (Soviet Union at the time) took place on February 24th, 1990. 1,851,343 voters attended the election from 2,851,359, which is 71.72%. The Lithuanian Redevelopment Movement (Persitvarkymo Sąjūdis) and the Independent Lithuanian Communist Party competed in the election.

Lithuanian Transitional Movement Lithuania's Movement managed to win the trust of the people and won the elections on October 24, 1990. The main goal of the Movement was to win the independence of the Lithuanian country.

Name is important On March 11th, 1990 Supreme Council changed their name to the Supreme Council of Lithuania and allowed their deputies to restore Lithuania‘s name. After that, during the same meeting the Supreme Council of Lithuania changed their name to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania. Finally, on November 28th, 1996 the government replaced the title of the Supreme Council of Lithuanian Republic by "the Supreme Council"

The Supreme Council On March 11th, Vytautas Landsbergis was elected to be the leader of the Supreme Council of Lithuania and active members who joined him were: Bronius Kuzmickas, Kazimieras Motieka, Česlovas Vytautas Stankevičius. The name "Republic of Lithuania" and the official emblem "Vytis" were recognized and accepted by the Supreme Council.

The historic session of the Supreme Council began on March 10th. The most important constitutional document “The Act” was adopted on the Restoration of the Independent Lithuanian country. Lithuania once again became an independent country.

On March 11th The Supreme Council passed the law on the provisional basics of the Republic of Lithuania. This law had been suspended in 1938. On March 11th-13th the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania passed other laws that regulated the restoration of the country and consolidated the statehood order of the restored country. Later, the first government of the restored Republic of Lithuania was formed.
