Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Ruling Dr. Tammy Summerville Director, Magnet Programs Mr. Kevin Wieseman Director, Extracurricular Programs May 19, 2016

The Alabama High School Athletic Association Has Granted Permission for Magnet Students to Participate in Athletics To enhance desegregation, the Consent Order requires that Huntsville City Schools recruit students to attend magnet programs The Superintendent sent a request to the AHSAA seeking an eligibility ruling for magnet students at the College Academy at Jemison High and the Creative and Performing Arts Magnet Program at Lee High be allowed to participate in sports The AHSAA recognizes immediate eligibility for Majority to Minority transfers and 8th grade students who transfer to an International Baccalaureate (IB) programme AHSAA will recognize immediate eligibility based upon the unique and special circumstances of the Consent Order that permits the district to recruit students to achieve the specific enrollment goals for desegregation purposes

The Procedure for Participation in Athletics Is Different from Participation in Extracurricular Activities At this time we are guided by the AHSAA regulations for registration and accepting non traditional students in Athletic activities. New Century Technology High School students will participate in Athletics at their zoned school. In order for students to participate in extracurricular activities (e.g., band, choir, JROTC, school clubs, etc.) they must be registered in Huntsville City Schools either as a traditional student or through the HCS virtual program. Both traditional and virtual students will participate in their zoned school extracurricular programs unless they are attending a magnet school. Eligibility questions should be directed through the high school athletic director to the school principal or the HCS Director of Athletics and Extracurricular Activities.
