Factoring with the Distributed Property Chapter 6 – Factoring Section 1c Factor polynomials with the distributive property by grouping.

Objective: The student will discover and practice how to factor polynomials with a negative monomial common factor and how to factor by grouping.

Vocabulary using the distributive property to group pairs and factor. The Distributive Property: ab + cb = b(a +c)

Distributive Property Factor = (2xy + 7x) – 1(2y + 7) = x(2y + 7) – 1(2y + 7) Distributive Property Answer: Example 2-2a

Distributive Property Factor = (4xy + 3y) – 5(4x + 3) = y(4x + 3) – 5(4x + 3) Distributive Property Answer: (4x + 3)(y – 5) Example 2-2b

Distributive Property Factor Distributive Property -3a(b - 5) + 4(b – 5) Answer: Example 2-3a

Distributive Property Factor 10x - 2xy + 3y - 15 = (10x – 2xy) + 3(y – 5) = 2x(5 – y) + 3(y – 5) Distributive Property = 2x(-1)(y – 5) + 3(y – 5) Answer: (y – 5)(-2x + 3) Example 2-3b

Lesson Summary: Objective: The student will discover and practice how to factor polynomials with a negative monomial common factor and how to factor by grouping.

Preview of the next Lesson: Objective: The students will define the term trinomial. The student will recall the FOIL method of multiplying binomials. The student will discover how to factor trinomials with one variable. The student will demonstrate factoring trinomials.
