Receive Jesus said to the two travellers … ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. From the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 24, verses 25 to 27

Engage Two people are travelling from Jerusalem to Emmaus. It is after the resurrection of Jesus. They had heard accounts from others. Jesus appears and walks beside them. They did not recognise him and he talked with them and later he shared bread and wine with them. It was at this point they recognised him and the two rushed back to Jerusalem to spread the news.

What do you find difficult and why? (e.g. jealousy, hate, envy) Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?” Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair. Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student. Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections. Activity suggestion … Draw a road, it is a ‘life’ road – write on it a few things that you have learnt at different points on your life journey.

Respond [Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] God, you helped the travellers see and understand the risen Jesus, help us to understand that which we find difficult in our lives. Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction).
