New York State Requirements for Mathematics: Three Years Of High School Mathematics Regents Diploma requirement for Mathematics: Pass one Regents Exam (Algebra I)

Mathematics Department Goals To offer a full complement of courses in mathematics and computer science for all types of mathematics learners   To provide rigorous mathematics instruction appropriate to student ability levels so that students will encounter challenges and experience success To have students become mathematical problem solvers and learn to be critical thinkers as well as reason and communicate mathematically To incorporate real world applications and technology which enhance the learning experience To have students engage in meaningful mathematics to meet the demands of the 21st century

8TH GRADE TEACHERS MAKE THE DECISION ABOUT COURSE PLACEMENT FOR GRADE 9 Please check with current 8th grade math teacher if you have any questions about placement into 9th grade mathematics courses. Honors placement follows criteria as outlined in the student handbook (Year Average of 90+, teacher recommendation)

Transitioning From Grade 8 to Grade 9 Math 8 CC ALGEBRA I Mod Math 8 CC ALGEBRA IA,IB (2 yr) ALGEBRA I GEOMETRY GEOMETRY HONORS

9th Grade Math Textbooks Are all online Hard copies are available HW is often assigned online which provides immediate feedback Live tutor online for help with selected odd problems Online videos with sample problems demonstrating solutions and provide explanations

Math Electives Available for 9th Graders: Intro to Computer Science & Statistics (Units on innovation, internet, intro to Java Script and Intro to Statistics) Web Design (one semester ) Python Programming (one semester) Math Workshop: (Meets every other day – no credit – offers math support – staffed by a math teacher) (AP Computer Science)

Typical Sequence for Modified Math Students 8 Modified Math 8 9 CC Algebra IA 10 CC Algebra IB (culminates with Algebra I Regents Exam) 11 Math 10 12 College Quantitative Reasoning Electives: Intro to Computer Science & Statistics Intro to Python Programming (one-semester) Web Design (one-semester) Math Workshop

Typical Sequence for On-Level Students 8 Math 8 9 CC Algebra I 10 Geometry (H or R) 11 Algebra2 & Trigonometry (On-level or Honors) 12 Precalculus (Accelerated or On-Level) or College Algebra or Trigonometry or College Quantitative Reasoning Electives: AP Computer Science AP Statistics Intro to Computer Science & Statistics Intro to Python Programming (one-semester) Web Design (one-semester) Math Workshop

Typical Sequence for Advanced Students 8 Algebra I 9 Geometry (H or On-Level) 10 Algebra 2 & Trigonometry (Honors or On-Level) 11 Precalculus (Accelerated or On-Level) (& Elective) 12 AP Calculus AB (& Elective) or AP Calculus BC (& Elective) Electives: AP Computer Science AP Statistics Intro to Computer Science and Statistics Intro Python Programming (one-semester) Web Design (one-semester)

Please note: The flow chart illustrates only the more traditional pathways. Many more options are available depending on student interest, course work, etc. The electives are very popular offerings and are often taken concurrently with other math courses. *Early College Experience (ECE): SUNY college accredited courses available through our partnership with Westchester Community College.

Advanced/Honors Level Mathematics Courses: Taught at a level above the Regents/Common Core Standards by enriching and extending the curriculum Limited use of Calculator These courses benefit students seeking majors in those areas There is an expectation that students are able to work more independently

ECE Courses (Early College Experience) Partnership with Westchester Community College Students have option of dual enrollment in High School and College level course Opportunity to earn college credit at reduced tuition All classes take place during the normal high school day and are taught by our high school teachers Students who successfully complete the ECE course shall receive college transcript from WCC ECE courses: Trigonometry College Quantitative Reasoning College Algebra Precalculus AP Statistics AP CalcAB
