Key Stage 2 SATs – 2019

What are SATs and how do we prepare our children for them?

Key Stage 2 SATs 2019: Dates Monday 13th May 2019 Test Monday 13th May 2019   English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Tuesday 14th May 2019 English Reading Wednesday 15th May 2019 Maths Paper 1 – Arithmetic and Maths Paper 2 – Problem Solving and Reasoning Thursday 16th May 2019 Maths Paper 3 – Problem Solving and Reasoning

How can you help your child to achieve their best between now and May? Reading – at least 3 times a week and ensure it is recorded in reading records. Times tables – practise, practise, practise! Spellings – word lists (in middle of reading records) and spelling patterns (to be sent home shortly when all patterns have been covered). Practice papers to revise from and re-do. Please help where you feel able to do so and where it is necessary, but encourage your child to ask me if there are still difficulties that need further explanation. Revision guides – CGP/Rising Stars are the best. Additional homework may be sent home as and when needed by the individual. Online Websites. Homework – on a Friday, as we have done so far this year. If your child has been given additional work, then this takes priority over Theme homework. Continually go over grammar terminology and encourage the children to give examples. There are lots of games online to help with this. Use the writing evaluation to help children edit and improve their work. Encourage them to attend booster classes.

Writing Evaluation – a tool to help your child improve their writing! Write effectively for a range of purposes Paragraphs Describe characters, settings and atmosphere Similes (his feet were as cold as ice) Metaphors (his feet were ice cubes) Adverbs and adverbial phrases (how, when, where) Carefully chosen adjectives and noun phrases (elderly, the elderly man with the walking stick) Co-ordinating and subordinating conjunctions Range of punctuation . , ‘ “ “ ? ! … : ; / ( ) – Correct tense Modal Verbs (could, might, may, will) Active and passive voice Dialogue to convey character and advance the action Almost all words spelled correctly (incl Y5 and 6 spelling words) Neat, joined up handwriting

Plus there are a whole load of different apps available for tablets and mobiles.

How can you help your Child in SATs week? Have early nights all week. Ensure your child has breakfast. Encourage them to attend breakfast club as this has been a great success over the last few years. Ensure they arrive on time. Ensure they have a water bottle in school all week. Let them bring food for break time if they wish. Inform us if they are not feeling well at the earliest opportunity. Be positive – all we ask is that they do their best and we will all be very proud of them!

Cliffe House A 2-night residential visit to Cliffe House will take place from Monday 1st July – Wednesday 3rd July 2019. More details regarding costs will follow and a question and answer session for parents will take place prior to the visit.
