CASE MANAGEMENT 101 An Introduction

What is a case manager? A case manager is the person responsible for overseeing all aspects of a special education student’s program and services. Case management responsibilities are in addition to and separate from direct instruction or direct service responsibilities.

What does the case manager do? Monitors the IEP and facilitates services. Is informed about the student’s program, progress and needs. Communicates with parents, teachers and service providers. Schedules annual reviews. Initiates 3-year re-evaluations. Ascertains that accommodations/modifications are provided as prescribed in the IEP. Seeks assistance when concerns arise. Sometimes supervises paraprofessionals.

What does the case manager not do? The case manager does not supervise teachers or related services providers. The case manager does not necessarily provide direct services to the student.

Who can be a case manager? Special Education Classroom Teachers Special Education Itinerant Teachers Speech/Language Pathologists Social Workers Other professional personnel as determined to be appropriate by individual teams
