Copernicus Australasia Regional Data Hub Pacific Island GIS & RS User Conference 26-30 November 2018 Presented by: Jonah Sullivan Geoscience Australia

Presentation Overview What’s the Hub and why was it established? What’s available from the Hub? Data use and some application examples How to access the Hub’s data? Interest in finding out more and/or participating in future training? http://www.copernicus.gov.au/

What’s the Copernicus Australasia Regional Data Hub? It’s a repository of satellite data from Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-3 from the European Commission’s Copernicus Programme It syncs, stores and shares Sentinel satellite data processed and stored in Europe over our Region It uses government research and digital infrastructure: GEANT and AARNET - to move up to three terabytes of data daily across the globe within 24 hours of satellite acquisition and/or availability National Computing Infrastructure Australia (in Canberra) - to store the data http://www.copernicus.gov.au/

Established to... run under a series of partnership agreements: support government research and operational programs that rely on Earth observation data bring Sentinel data to local computing infrastructure and processing pipelines enhance access by research, industry and civil society in our Region, and help facilitate collaboration between Australians, New Zealanders, Europeans and inhabitants of the South Pacific and South-East Asia run under a series of partnership agreements: Consortium partners that manage and operate it: Delivery partners who sync and distribute the data across the globe: Supporting partners who provide access to the data: http://www.copernicus.gov.au/

What’s available from the Hub? The Hub’s Region of Interest Currently: Sentinel-1, all-weather, day and night radar imagery Sentinel-2, high resolution optical imagery Sentinel-3, high accuracy optical, radar and altimetry data, including Near-Real-Time and derivative: ocean colour, land reflectances, land and sea temperature, and ocean and land topography products Coming soon: Sentinel-5P, a precursor to providing dedicated atmospheric composition monitoring More to come: Copernicus Programme aims to operate six families of Sentinel satellites with dozens of contributing space missions. Sentinel-1 400K images & growing* Sentinel-5P Sentinel-2 830K images & growing* Sentinel-3 2.7M images & growing* *as of November 2018

What’s available from the Hub? ...continued Sentinel imagery, beginning of each mission, providing a rich density of imagery through time: Sentinel-1 - from 2014 to present Sentinel-2 - from 2015 to present Sentinel-3 - from 2016 to present To-date the Hub has synced over 3.9 Million images and has distributed over 2,100 terabytes of data to users. These numbers increase by three terabytes daily. Sentinel - 2 imagery acquired in month of October 2018 Diagrams on right are density maps showing geographic extent and frequency of Sentinel imagery acquired for the month of October available in our Region. http://www.copernicus.gov.au/ Sentinel - 1 imagery acquired in month of October 2018

Sentinel-1 core product range: The Copernicus Australasia Regional Data Hub: aims to sync all data within 24 hours of its availability from the European portals/hubs and is syncing all above products. Sentinel-1 image over Suva, Fiji Here’s an example of SAR imagery from Sentinel-1, showing a combination of Single polarisation (vertical), dual polarisation (vertical, horizontal), and ratio of the two. SAR is able to capture day and night, and is not affected by clouds.

Sentinel-2 core product range: Now available from the Copernicus Australasia Regional Data Hub Will be available in the future from the Copernicus Australasia Regional Data Hub Not available from European Space Agency Graphical Representation of SENTINEL-2 Core Products BOA -> Bottom of Atmosphere TOA -> Top of Atmosphere In above core product diagram, the Copernicus Australasia Regional Data Hub is only syncing level L1C from Sentinel-2 satellite, and plans to sync level 2 products when they become available, from the European Space Agency (ESA), early next calendar year. The reason L1b is not available from Copernicus Australasia is because it is not available from ESA. https://sentinel.esa.int/web/sentinel/missions/sentinel-2/data-products

Revisit Frequency for Sentinel-1 & 2: Sentinel-1 constellation offers an improvement in revisit time over ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT ASAR, and a continuity of wide area coverage with ENVISAT ASAR, Sentinel-1 The Sentinels have a highglobal revisit frequency due to their multiple constellations and their two satellite configurations e.g., Sentinel-3 has Sentinel 3A and 3B. https://sentinels.copernicus.eu/web/sentinel

Revisit Frequency for Sentinel-3 instruments: Sentinel-3 SLSTR instrument mean revisit time with two-satellite configuration, red showing daily revisits at equator and blue less than 0.4 at higher altitudes. Sentinel-3 - Altimetry subcycle - 4 days - 57 orbits. World Map Sentinel-3 OLCI instrument mean revisit time with a two-satellite configuration, red showing 2 day revisit at equator and blue less than 0.5 at higher altitudes. https://sentinel.esa.int/web/sentinel/user-guides/sentinel-3-olci/coverage

Hub is sponsored to support Government programs such as: Statewide Monitoring Programs https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/vegetation/mapping/statewide-monitoring Digital Earth Australia (DEA) Program http://www.ga.gov.au/about/projects/geographic/digital-earth-australia LandMonitor http://landmonitor-beta.landgate.wa.gov.au/home.php FireWatch Aurora http://aurora.landgate.wa.gov.au/home.php

Sentinel applications: monitor native vegetation changes and woody vegetation extent in support of legislative and regulatory requirements improve the quantification of ground cover information model land condition of Great Barrier Reef catchments map (coal seam gas) physical infrastructures in support of regulatory and activity monitoring develop methodologies to monitor ground deformation and subsidence measure natural water flows and monitor water quality both coastal and inland fire burn scar mapping, fuel loading and modelling of fire behaviour mapping of broad crop types respond and recover from disasters monitor, detect and characterise land, water and infrastructure changes across Australia contribute to climate impact research and studies These are Consortium partner applications/uses in the Hub’s ROI. http://www.copernicus.gov.au/

How to access the Hub’s data Register with SARA at https://copernicus.nci.org.au/sara.client/#/register New Zealand users can register here: http://copernicus.csst.co.nz Queries can be constructed in several ways GUI https://copernicus.nci.org.au/sara.client/#/explore API SARA api (powered by resto), eg Sentinel-2 Data over Fiji: https://copernicus.nci.org.au/sara.server/1.0/api/collections/S2/search.json?_pretty=true&q=Fiji Data from all Collections over Fiji (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3): https://copernicus.nci.org.au/sara.server/1.0/api/collections/search.json?_pretty=true&q=Fiji Auscophub specifically the sara client, highly recommended for regular bulk downloads, and is a Python module which wraps the SARA api interface. eg auscophub_searchSara.py -q "q=Fiji" --sentinel 2 -q "startDate=2018-08-01" -q "completionDate=2018-09-01" --curlscript curl-script.bash --jsonfeaturesfile feature-file.geojson The Hub’s portal or access point for getting data is called SARA - Sentinel Australasia Regional Access http://www.copernicus.gov.au/
