HOUGHTON ENERGY EFFICIENCY TEAM - HEET HOUGHTON COUNTY is a semifinalist in the Georgetown University Energy Prize Competition

A team of interested community leaders which originated within MTU. THE FOCAL POINT IS THE COMMUNITY’S REDUCTION OF ELECTRICITY AND GAS CONSUMPTION. THE CONTESTANT THAT DOES SO, AND SHOWS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN THE FOLLOWING METRICS, STANDS TO WIN $5 MILLION! THESE ARE THE METRICS BY WHICH THE COMPETITION IS BEING JUDGED: POINTS AREA OF SCORING Competition Performance (actual energy savings) 15 Innovation 15 Potential for Replication 10 Likely Future Performance 10 Equitable Access, Community and Stakeholder Engagement 10 Education 15 Overall Quality and Success

GREAT NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS IN MANY AREAS: FROM NOW THROUGH DEC 2016 www.energizehoughton.org/volunteer CONTEST RUNS FROM JAN 1, 2015 – DEC 31, 2016 ALL OF OUR ORGANIZATIONAL EFFORTS ARE LED BY VOLUNTEERS! SECTORS BEING JUDGED: DOMESTIC AND MUNICIPAL USE 353 LIKES SO FAR SOME EXAMPLES OF CURRENT VOLUNTEER NEED – this gets added to as we progress: MATERIALS DONATIONS: Compiling contact information on manufacturers of energy efficient products in order to save on winterization costs. a TWEETER! TAKING PICTURES OF MUNICIPAL STREET LIGHTS in order to determine the make and model to help them switch to LED lighting.

EXAMPLES OF FUTURE VOLUNTEER NEED: MEDIA! We are writing grants to enable students to shoot and edit footage for our future YouTube Channel. The channel will feature: NEWS-REPORT INTERVIEWS of winterization volunteers and recipients; SHORTS on Winterization Tactics sponsored by local hardware stores, lumberyards and contractors; FOOTAGE of HEET’s Monthly Teen Talent Show/Open Mic; PRESENTATIONS from monthly HEET TARGET: ENERGY SERIES featuring energy experts from efficiency, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, policy and U.P. Energy Landscape ; GAMIFICATION! Developing ways that we can inspire the community to get on, get in and save electricity and heat. DATA CRUNCHING! How can we even make this sound fun?

KEWEENAW COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL GRANT Awarded HEET with a $1000 grant 3 HIGH SCHOOLS; each with a team of 5 volunteers, to winterize 3-5 houses in Fall 2015 semester TODAY, looking for 3 Team Leaders to lead the recruitment of 5 team members. We can give a Team Leader $25 to do the job; and $25 for developing and printing materials needed to do so.

how does this work? STUDENT TEAMS learn the skills through NPTs Generations of Energy: Efficiency Model – built with another YAC grant by CLK shop students. The Model teaches you the tools, materials and skillsets needed to winterize a home (Fall Semester, early) STUDENT TEAMS work with NPT to pick a total of 3-5 homes to winterize next fall. YOU LEARN LIFE-LONG SKILLS!
