PBS International Technical fabrics in seed production & breeding

PBS International – at the intersection between technical fabrics & plant science

What are non-wovens? Other 17.4% Hygiene 32.9% Medical 2.4% Automotive 3.6% Clothing 4.4% Household 5.5% Nonwovens are used for a vast array of applications. Some absorbance of water is important, in others imperviousness to water is critical. Sometimes strength is a central requirement, other times the ability to tear is essential. One of the biggest uses is hygiene – nappies, sanitary protection etc. Here the ability for fluids to pass through and be held in place is a key property. Then construction and geoengineering – for instance you’ll probably be familiar with Tyvek housewrap, designed to prevent water passing through. Cars use a wide array of nonwovens - from air bags to lining of the trunk. Disposable tablecloths, envelopes – the list is huge Agriculture makes up about 1.8% of nonwoven use, typically in crop protection. Wipes 16.0% Building & Civil Engineering 17.9% Source: Edana 2008

Give advantages of Duraweb® and disadvantages of others by reverse reference. Good barrier to pollen, torturous path. Breathable, air flows in and out. Rain resistant but lets humidity out. Strong, tear resistant, good tensile strength but flexible and foldable. Birds can not easily tear it. Lets more light in then any other pollen bag material.
